I have my speaker setting on the pioneer for 9.2 front high on and Front wide on this will not give you both high and wide speakers on at the same time but what this allows you to do is to switch from difference surround modes where one will put the front wide speakers on and the other one will put the front high speakers on.
Such as if you are in standard surroundsound options and You toggle through the different surround options you will come to one that is called "wide surround sound " if you click on this one it will then add the front wide speaker to the mix and the front high speakers will be off. If you then toggle to the option of ProLogic IIz and you push this button the front wide ones will go off and the front high ones will come on. But never front wide and highs on at the same time even those the manual could lead you to believe this.
So in speaker setting if you only set 9.2 front high speakers on only you will only get the Prologic IIz options in your surround sound menus . Same as if he only select 9.2front wide speakers on only in the speaker set up menu you will only get the neonX versions of surround-sound to chose from as prologic IIz will not be an option .
So if you have front high speakers on the wall and front wide speakers on the wall I believe the best option is in the set up menus to leave it at 9.2 front on and wide on as this gives you more options in the surround-sound menus
A good way I found to check out the different sound of the different surround-sound is to use the pioneer remote and use the buttons 1 ,2,3 and the one with says audio and above it it says THX
As when you use the 1 button you'll notice the writing above it says auto ALC or direct so you can set this one to digital true HD and then on button 2 it says standard above it so you can then go into the standard settings and this is where you'll find "wide surround-sound movie " this will turn your front wide speaker on and then if you go to advance surroundsound which is button #3you can then set it to optimum sound surround then last you can go to the THX favourites and set it up whatever THX mode you like I Was using PLIIz + THX cinema . So then once you have these 4 button set to the surroundsound you like and when you are watching whatever movie you want( I have bee using Star Trek into the darkness ) you just hit each button and It will go to that preset surround sound mode ,this to me gives you a good idea what you get between the front wide speakers (button 2) front high speakers (button THX)or just the 7.1 true surround-sound (button 1) and then optimum sound at (button 3) I hope all this helps.
