Krell Foundation Owners Thread - Page 3

Well there is really no comparison. I can tell you the Krells bass is tighter and deeper. The Krells highs are more extended. The highs really shimmer. No way is it forward sounding though. But the mids are where the Krell shines. It is unexplainable really of what is going on there. They are smoother but with a lot more quickness, or attack. The layering is much better on the Krell. The hight and width of soundstage is bigger and better.

You will also find yourself turning up the volume way more. The dynamic range is better I actually watch movies at very near reference level now. But when action happens you will want to jump under your chair. I was used to being way below reference with the Integra. It always felt way to loud. Now it is just right. Soft lows but loud when it should be.

The analog section is fantastic also. I actually can't wait to get another turntable.

By the way it came down between the Foundation and the 8801 for me also. I know there is the Yamaha and supposedly the Acurus coming out. I can't see how they will compare sonically to the Foundation. I chose the Foundation and after I get the setup figured out totally I will be one totally satisfied owner.

Couple criticisms though. I wish there was an eq on off toggle. I have to go into the menu now to toggle off for music. I like it on for movies. I also wish there were an actual manual instead of that owners reference. The reference isn't detailed enough. I will be calling them about these and the fact it won't do dsd direct even though the chipset is capable of it. I believe it is firmware limited.

Thanks Ron! Nicely presented...
Sure it is a bit annoying to have to go dig the menu to turn off the EQ option.
About the user manual, did you feel that the customer support was able to reasonably and adequately able to help you? My thought is that, I can have the fast car with the greatest pick-up ability of going to 60mph at 4.1 sec, but if I am not trained properly to drive that machine, I will certainly won't be able to leverage the capability of that awesome piece! In that it is, to me, just a glamarous Toyota Camry!!! So, getting sufficient help to configure the Krell Foundation is extremely important. If I happen to buy this, I will join you to demand a resolution of this issue.
About on-screen display of volume/Audio type being played etc., I vaguely remember someone mentioning that there is a software download that will allow us to get the online display. We can explore this further. But even if I don't get the display, it will be a lower priority for me compared to manual...
Thanks again for sharing your experience and observation.

Yes there already is a control app. It is pretty plain however. As was said in the review there will be a new one coming out. It is supposed to be a lot more advanced.

I will say that the remote has the strongest ir signal of any remote I have ever used.

So far Krell has been wonderful to deal with. I will tell you more this coming week.

Anyone else notice the S-1500 uses 70W in standby? That seems kind of high --their newer 3250e/2250e offer a low power standby using only 2W. Do you think Krell will update the S-1500?

I think it was released in 2010 with the S-1200 processor --It's newish, but not nearly as new as the 3250e, 2250e or the Foundation Preamp. It certainly is a perfect match style wise to the S-1200. I don't think the form matches the Foundation at all.

Another problem is my foundation cannot detect optical input (TV input) signal after around 15 minutes. I need to change another source and select the TV input again to resume normal. But around 15 minutes later, no sound again and I need to redo the above every 15 minutes…..

You poor guy or gal? Anyway have you called Krell or your cable co. on that issue? I wonder if there is a setting somewhere that is not fully jiveing with the Foundation? There was something in the oppo 105 thread about a box that wasnt working properly. They had to change some setting and it worked.

yappi/Ron and all other Krell pals here,
I got my K.F. delivered today around 12.15pm today - ahead of schedule! Eeeeh - ha!!!!

Can't wait to get home, I am actually getting out from office right now, a bit early.

Will still have my old buddy Integra DHC 80.2. So, will be able to compare till I sell that one. As some of you have seen from my previous posts, I was trying to pick between Marantz 8801 and Krell. Finally went for Krell. Hope I have taken the right decision.

Will keep you all posted... about all aspects - Good, Bad and Ugly!

I think you will find it to your liking. At least sound wise. I really hope you like it. It sounds like Krell is getting it right.

Yuppi sorry I put it all back together before I saw your post about the pics you wanted.

I just find that the Coaxial digital input has the same problem of losing the signal.

This unit is my second Foundation, my first Foundation has similar problem that it totally cannot detect Coaxial digital input and I replace it.

I think the Coaxial & Optical digital broad is a common bug of Foundation.

Is there any problem about the digital input broad of Foundation and how can I fix it.

Well how is it going with the Krell? I hope you are enjoying it as much as I am. If you are like me about right now you are enjoying the sound but wondering if you have set it up right because of that owner's reference. And if you are like me and trigger your amps on with the triggers you have accidentally hit the wrong input a couple times and have triggered off your amps. Lol I wish that you could globally set the triggers. But it is a very good way of doing it. Just takes a lot more time setting up.

What happened yuppi? With as many problems as you have had I would be frustrated. How is your power there where you live? Do you have lots of problems with electronic gear?

All the speaker abnormal sound, woofer always a loudly "boom" every few second.....etc, included the digital input problem, all of them and due to firmware 1.08....when I resume 1.05......all resume normal and the SQ is much better than 1.08.eek.gif

You may try out an optical or coax digital connection for 1.08.
I think I have 1.07. Dated august 31st. Or is this 1.08?
No just checked 1.08 dated aug 21

I have 1.06 (wrote as 1.05) and 1.08 on hand. I think 1.06 is more stable and QS, Only USB can downgrade the firmware.

The digital in still have problem in 1.06, but the period is arround one hour now.
Interesting. So the problems you are having are firmware related. Make sure you report this to Krell. This is good information.

This isn't the first I've read about poor support. It is making me consider other brands for my next pre preorder. Anyone else have any thoughts?

At these prices it should be the dealer that goes to bat for you, They have both the contacts and a way to steer future sales if things don't get resolved. Like i expected we lost the original thread starter who seems to start threads more than anything else. The reason i got the denon in 2008 was because i knew it was a stable system it had been out for a while made by a big player and used by more than a few forum members. If you go for a highend brand there is always this risk since most of the time they don't fully build their own digital parts and have people inside the company to solve it.

Hope it gets resolved soon.

Daniel.
