Calibrate with the brightness reduced. Here's why: electronic displays are not "plug and play" devices. Image brightness requirements are dependent upon ambient light conditions. Since no manufacturer can know how much light will be in the viewing environment when a computer monitor will be used, they default to a picture mode that can compete with bright office conditions out of the box. A bright room is not conducive to the best human viewing conditions or optimum image quality.
Display calibration has to be considered as a system
approach. This must include the display, the signal source devices, and human factors (includes room conditions).
