If the couch is going on the east wall, opposite the stairs, then I would put the surrounds high up in the back corners of the room, pointed towards the couch. The multiple reflective surfaces in the corner will help with envelopment; the wide spread will maintain stereo separation in the surround field.

Hi I know its been a long time but im finally now ready to put them up. Are u suggesting the wall by the window and opposite it the wall by the opening to the kitchen? Thanks!

Yes, I would mount the surrounds on those two walls, as far back as possible (i.e., in the back corners of the room).

Would it work even if the side by the kitchen is further to the couch than the other side? Also would it be ok to hang it up high up by the ceiling? Maybe 8 ft up so it wouldnt look too weird? Id have it up and point it downwards towards the couch? Thanks alot for the input

So the speakera would be facing each other

High up in the back tri-corners (where the back corners meet the ceiling) will sound fine. The speakers would be facing each other but, if you tilt them down, they'll be facing the listeners (better). While symmetrical placement would be optimal, being at different distances from the surrounds won't be a problem (your receiver will adjust levels & delays to make your surrounds appear the same distance away).
