Home Theater Makeover Build - Replacing Many Components

Thread Starter
I'm working on a build for a co-worker that has a 10+ year old self built home theater. I have yet to see it because his two kegs for the bar won't be here until later in the week biggrin.gif

What he has is a Laser Disc player, VCR, antenna TV ported through the VCR, SD Comcast cable box from recent Blast+ upgrade, DVD player, Blu-ray player, AVR without HDMI, 9.1 speakers, projector (actually HD, but might be dying), a rather newish gaming PC running flight sim, and I think an actual 16:9 TV. Guess what I suggested could replace most of those devices?

Yesterday during lunch we went to Microcenter and bought some parts:

$199.99 Intel Core i5 4670K 3.4GHz Socket LGA 1150 Boxed Processor
$34.99 ASRock H87M Pro4 Socket LGA 1150 mATX Intel Motherboard
$89.99 Samsung 840 Series 120GB Solid State Drive
$219.99 Ceton InfiniTV 4 PCIe TV Tuner
$64.99 Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB (2x 4GB) DDR3-1333 CL9 Memory
$139.99 Seagate Barracuda EP 3TB 7,200RPM SATA 6.0Gbps 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
$139.99 Fractal Design Node 605 Silent Home Theater Small Form Factor ATX Computer Case
$59.99 Corsair CX Series CX500M 500 Watt ATX Modular Power Supply
$59.99 MyGica X5075 ATSC / NTSC Hybrid PCIe x1 TV Tuner Card
$49.99 CyberPower 625VA UPS

Turns out the Fractal Design Node 605 requires a Slimline optical drive which Microcenter didn't have in stock so off to Amazon:

$69.99 LG Slim Blu-ray Drive
$8.39 Slimline SATA to SATA Adapter with Power

So my plan for this whole thing is to use iRule for control and I'll be running it on a Nexus 7. Out of his nine speakers he only needs seven so that makes the AVR upgrade rather simple. I have a Yamaha and he mentioned he had a nice Yamaha system in the past, so I went that route which should help me out on learning curves and tech support. Shopping list continued:

$699.95 Yamaha RX-V775WA 7.2 Channel Network AV Receiver with AirPlay (Black)
$92.66 Global Cache iTach Flex IP
$5.15 Global Cache Flex Link Tri-port Cable
$99.99 iRule Builder PRO Programming Software
$229.00 Google Nexus 7 2013
$28.31 TRENDnet 8-Port Unmanaged Gigabit GREENnet Standard Switch (8 x 10/100/1000Mbps)

When I got home I was able to mostly build the HTPC (minus the Blu-ray drive and cable management). Tonight will be the software. Since he will be ripping a lot of discs I'm leaning towards MyMovies since it pretty much does auto-ripping and automatically adds media to the library. Even if you don't rip the discs it will add media as offline.

$87.99 Arcsoft TotalMedia Theatre 6
$128.00 AnyDVD HD Lifetime Subscription
$100.00 MyMovies Full License

I'll be able to configure the computer and 90% of the remote at home as well as push remote updates as needed since iRule syncs to the online builder software. Cabling evaluation will be in a few days, expecting to be finished in about two weeks. Any inputs are appreciated.

Current pictures aren't that exciting:

Fractal Design Node 605 (minus the optical drive). Has room for up to four HDDs and ATX mobo. Provisions for three 120mm fans, includes two. Sound proofing on inside of lid.

Minimal buttons, the mess shown is simply my temporary mouse and keyboard connections.
