Need help setting up projector and direct tv to receiver

I am really struggling to come up with a solution on how to hook my direct tv and ps3 to my projector, and have them both work through the surround sound. I'm new to the whole home theater scene. Any help would be most appreciated. Here's the input/outputs I have available:

Direct tv - hdmi out. Digital audio out (component)

Ps3 - hdmi out. Digital audio out ( optical)

Projector - 2 x hdmi in. No speakers

Receiver - hdmi out. Digital audio in ( optical)

At a minimum please provide make/model information for the receiver.

Make/model for the projector and other gear would be helpful too.

Whoops, yea that would be helpful!

Projector: Optoma HD20
Sony Playstation 3
Direct TV Unit is a genie satellite
Receiver is basically a HTIB. - Samsung 5.1 Channel Blu-ray 3D Home Theater System Almost just like this one: http://www.samsung.com/us/video/home-theater/HT-D5500/ZA

I don't think there is. You need a real receiver so at you can send Hdmi from the PS3 and direct tv to the receiver then from the receiver to e projector.

+1

I looked at the manuals for your gear and I think I have to agree with SupaKats. You are going to have to buy/upgrade something to make it all work. The "receiver" that came with your HTIB isn't really made to receive much except for the blu-ray player than came in the same box.

Thanks for the input all. I'm curious as to what you think of this potential idea:

I run the direct tv to the projector over the HDMI for the video
I get a converter to take the coax audio to optical for the receiver for audio.

I do the same video setup (HDMI) for the PS3, and run optical audio to receiver.
The use this switch to select the input based on what
device I'm using.

Would that give me proper video and audio for each? It seems like it would in theory......

You'd be much better off with this nifty HDMI switch, which will output digital audio and HDMI separately:

http://www.monoprice.com/Product/?c_id=101&cp_id=10110&cs_id=1011002&p_id=5557&seq=1&format=2#description

Then just one box for everything. Run the output from the Samsung HTiB, DirecTV and PS3 into the HDMI inputs, projector on the output, and an optical cable back to the HTiB. You'll be switching audio and video at the same time, but will need to change inputs on the HTiB as well. About as simple as you can make it given the limitations.

Yes, we'd all recommend a "real" AVR over just about any HTiB solution - the problem here is that you'd have to replace everything else, too. The speakers are not compatible with separate components, with a very low impedance (3 ohm), and you'd also need to add a BD player and a powered subwoofer.

If I was going to make that leap, I'd save up for an AVR with Internet services and mobile device control (models starting in the mid-$300 range) decent speakers and a moderate subwoofer.

Hope that helps. I always steer folks away from the single-component HTiB solutions because of the lack of upgrade potential. That Monoprice switch is certainly the cheapest solution for now.

You only have two inputs so it wouldn't be too difficult to use the equipment you have. You can run DirecTV HDMI to the PJ and the optical to the receiver and do the same witht eh PS3. You just have to switch the audio to go with the video each time you want to game/watch a movie. I would just use the PS3 for movie viewing since it is almost certainly a better player than the HTiB option.

But what most of us do is route everything through the receiver and have the receiver do the HDMI switching. You are going to run into problems when you add even more component. Almost all new gen receivers do HDMI switching quite well and even pass through 3D.

What Jautor outlined is why everyone around here will tell folks to run away from most HTiB (some HTiB are actually upgradeable). If you want to introduce anything new or want to upgrade speakers, sub, etc you have to replace everything.

Thanks for all the info everyone. jautor - that sounds like a pretty good solution until my budget allows me to get a better system. Thanks!
