Looking to do a lot of architectual elements and was considering foam/resin columns, crown, etc. Have seen some foam beams that were impossible to tell from real wood.

I've used the crown moulding and some quarter round trim that was foam. It cuts clean which is nice, but you have to be careful or you can dent it. Make sure to set the pressure properly on your nailer or the nails will shoot through and not hold. If your wall isn't perfectly straight the foam bends a bit better to follow the contour and not leave gaps I think. I think I still prefer real wood if the cost is similar but If you are going to cope the joints or use it in a wet area like a bathroom I would use the foam.

I've seen some really ornate 15" crown and columns that would be tough to recreate in wood. The carved 21" column capitals in wood would be $$$$
