I am interested in trying this out. Before I do...Does the Dune support hi-res FLAC file playback?

Btw the next release which solves some residual bugs and introduces a webapp for any smartphone/tablet will available probably in a week time. From the webapp you can browse, search, playout single/multiple albums even in shuffle or gapless mode (no need to have the tv ON)

A beta is already available but being so close to release it is probably better to wait. Of course you can use the existing version for now.

Gapless will be nice keep us informed. I would love a app instead of having to have the TV on.

Gapless is definitely possible both on TV and via the webapp. To achieve that DMM creates playlists including images.

Below some images of the upcoming web app

INFORMATION for the DMM users

Last.fm deprecated an API method DMM uses to gather all pictures about an artist (photos, backgrounds). In the current version is therefore only possible to get covers from last.fm.
In the new release either I found an alternative or there will be only 1 picture for an artist that Last.fm can retrieve.

Sorry!

I don't have a problem waiting. Is their a user manual (or wiki) that I can check out and start reading about the setup?

The user manuals (PC program + web app) of the new version are at : https://www.dropbox.com/sh/4iojcaq6drtgky8/CoTV5NFsU1/DMM_Music_Beta

You'all find the beta to install.

I just uploaded a video-based guided tour of DMM 1.2.8. Check it out here

Very much interested also in your feedback about these collaterals: useful, enough details ? Suggestions (a part a better english smile.gif ) ?

my apologies, forgot to change the status. Done now !
First of all, I did not watch the video. I did all my setup based on the instruction manual. Secondly, this software looks very promising and I'm excited!

Here are some comments/questions so far:

Change dropbox to separate folders by language, i.e. one for French and one for English

What's the dune_plugin_dmm_2031129 for?

Change "select" to say "browse"

would be nice in the program to have a "?" to explain what the options are for setup.

I assume you mean "note" and not "nota"

my albums are named as such: /Music/Rock/Annie Lennox - Diva [1992] and /Music/Rock/Annie Lennox - Bare [2003]
and are not listed under Annie Lennox/Bare etc... is this a problem? It seems in all your examples that albums are underneath the Artist folder.

I don't understand what the separators are for? Can you give me an example?

the examples of menu configuration should be moved up in the instruction manual pdf to the front few pages.

do i need to do exports if the menu file is saved on a ssd connected to the Dune?

The software seems incredibly powerful, but it would be nice to have a simple mode that disabled most of the options, so I could just get it up and running and then after using it I could turn on an advanced mode to customize it.

And lastly, for now, how do I access this from my Android? What do I need to download/set up?

Thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian B.
thanks for your feedback.
Did you actually install and use DMM ?

1) in the release version (non beta) I'll separate FR from EN
2) plugin. This is to be able to use my WebApp. DMM exports your menu anywhere you like (NAS, SD card, USB stick, etc.); the webapp is embedded in the exported menu (as an html page, css, javascript and JSON files). To run a webapp you need to have it hosted on a web server. The plugin makes the exported menu visible by the Dune native web server. For simplicity of access it is preferable to make your menu one of the Dune favorite
3) your albums organization is fine. It is just preferable to have songs of an album inside a folder with a name containing either the album title of the artist name. This is to allow DMM to look for local pictures for an album (cover, background); for that DMM needs to decide what is the album folder. Actually what matters are the tags. I made a test on a 2500 songs library where I dropped all songs in the same folder without issues
4) Separators: few tags (artist, composer, genre) can have multiple values. Values are separated by special characters. With the separators in DMM you specify which characters you use as separators and in which order (in case you have more than one)
5) exporting in DMM means creating the menu jukebox. You can export on any type of storage:
- a NAS
- a USB disk attached to the PC that you later connect to the dune
- a SMB resource
- a SD card
- etc
6) Android : you have 2 options
  • DMC (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=babachan.android.dunemediacontroller&hl=en): this is a great native app that displays on your device exactly what is on the TV. It is a general purpose dune jukebox navigation and remote control tool. TV can stay Off
  • DMM WebApp (check the user guide). This is what I did. As DMC it gives you access to your DMM jukebox with TV off. However it does not reproduce the layout you'll see on TV. It brings several nice features that DMC does not have like search, more integrated playout control, gapless and shuffle playback, etc. Being a webapp and not a native app it might be a bit less fluid and reactive than DMC. Also it is for DMM only, you cannot browse, eg, Zappiti or Yadis.

7) Simple mode: you're right. I'll need to think about. Any specific suggestion ? May be hiding the template editing section ? Also menu configuration is probably overly complex for 99% of the situation. For the ? on the setup. Don't have that but have tooltips (not enough probably).

Al

Hi Al,
First of all, thanks for taking the time....
Secondly, I have so many issues/problems/questions I don't even know where to begin.

I spent a few hours re-tagging some of my files as I realized that a lot of them were messed up and I wanted to give the program the best possible chance. You should really emphasize how important this is before loading the software otherwise you will have a big mess on your hands!

Ok, so I see in the manual there is a nice diagram of the order of things...but I saw it and went on without paying much mind. It should really be laid out that this is the process...Scan the library, scrape the images and THEN export. I was just lamely doing things in a different order that probably doesn't make sense to anyone but me. I was trying to add cover art myself before realizing I could just have the program scrape the images for me.

So issue #1: I have a bunch of single songs that are all in folders called _Single Tracks underneath genre folders, i.e. Alternative Rock/_Single Tracks/Talking Heads - Psychokiller.flac. These are tagged with the album being "Single Tracks". Your program puts these all in different "Single Track" folders, but manages to sort same bands together in the same "Single Track" folder. I would rather have a single "Single Track" folder with all these songs in it.

Issue #2: Somewhere along the line it truncated some of the band names, so Earth, Wind & Fire just became Wind.

Question #1: I see under the image area there is a section for covers (50) and pictures (1). How do I get the software to download more than one picture, so I can choose the one I like?

Issue #3: I wanted to try the DMC first to see how it works. The answer? Not very well. First, most of the albums I select get an error message: "Unable to browse to 'smb:://DUNE/B...(name of the USB stick)/MusicMenu/Albums/...and then the specific album." Then, "Failed to load blah blah blah.....

Issue #4: So I find an album that works ...maybe 20%? and it shows a track listing, but it causes and error in the Dune that says (on screen) that the file doesn't exist.

Issue #5: This causes the Dune to lock up and won't work with the controller anymore.

Issue #6: I managed to use the remote control to skip and cancel, but then it just plain locked up.

How do I add a song to "play next" when something is already playing? This either isn't obvious or isn't possible?

Issue #7?: Everytime I try to start something playing this advertisement comes up in the ap. I suppose this will go away if I purchase something from the play store?

I absolutely love the album graphics. This is the flash that I'm looking for and don't get with Sonos, besides it won't play hi-res files.

I take it you don't recommend this app anyway, so I will try the web app and see what it looks like; however, I have no idea how to do that.

Above you say: "plugin. For simplicity of access it is preferable to make your menu one of the Dune favorite"

Sorry, but I have no idea what you are talking about. What exactly do I have to do? Do I put the plug-in somewhere? What web address do I go to? I just don't know where to begin....Do all I need to do is make the MusicMenu (what I've name my menu) a favorite in the Dune? Then what?

I may have some more time tomorrow evening, but I'll wait to hear back on how I should proceed.

Also, I have lots of ideas on how to streamline the program, but I won't waste your time till I get the thing working.

There is an error message if you click on a picture in the image section and don't click on an album to assign the art to.

Hi Brian,

I'll do my best to answer your points here. May be for quicker turnaround we can continue by email (albertocasale@yahoo.com)

Tagging : you're right I should explain better how important this is. Actually DMM relies ONLY on your tags and, to a lesser extent on the library folder organization. The key points are
- all songs of an album should have exactly the same content in the album tag otherwise they won't be grouped together. this isn't case sensitive but accents and punctuation matter
- you need to consistently use the same separators to have tags like artist or genre or composer holding multiple values. There is no standard separator but the most used ones are "/" and ";". DMM 1.2.8 gives you more flexibility as you can also use "," "\", "|"

Folder structure : it is less important. I did a test dropping 2000+ well tagged mp3 files in the same folder and DMM organised them for me. However folder structure is fundamental if you have images you want to use as cover, artist picture, artist/album background. To do so DMM needs to be able to identify the album and artist folders. To simplify the recognition you should have the title of album or the name of one of the artist as part of the album folder. The simplest way is an organisation iTunes-like: Music\Artist_A\Albums_AA\[CDs optionally]\Songs. This was you'll put your cover/background images for the album AA in the Music\Artist_A\Album_AA and the picture/background for artist A in Music\Artist_A
This isn't mandatory though, you can have the structure you like e.g. Music\Genre\Albums\songs, Music\format\Letter_of_Artist\Albums, etc

Single Tracks folder: I understand you'd like to have all your Single Tracks (of any genre) being part of a single "album" called "Single Tracks". The simplest way is the have a single folder called Single tracks with all songs in it or a folder called Single Tracks and a subfolder per genre with the single track songs of that genre in it

Band names truncated: this is easy. DMM 1.2.8beta by default used as recognised tag separators the all set which includes the ",". The final release will propose as default only "/" and ";". So for your issue, redo the menu making sure to put only the tag separators you need in the menu configuration dialog. In particular make sure the "," isn't there

More Pictures retrieved: currently last.fm removed one API that DMM used to retrieve all the images for an artist. Therefore when you use last.fm you only get one picture, several covers and no backgrounds. Use fanart.tv as provider and you'll get more pictures. To get them all you can also use in a single query both last.fm and fanart. To do so, click on the options button at the far right of the toolbar and enable last.fm+fanart

DMC: I definitely recommend DMC for any android user. It is a great piece of software. It can be your way to browse your dune jukeboxes (zappiti, yadis and of course DMC) and control the playout (remote control, with advertisement in the free version). DMC is a general purpose dune jukebox browser while DMM web app is for DMM only and it has a deeper knowledge of your dmm menu, it can do search, etc.
To make DMC (and DMM webapp) to work and actually play your files you need to check the box "Mobile App Compatibility" in the menu configuration dialog. So first test is : does the music play on TV with remote control ? If it doesn't there is likely an issue with the dune path. DMC cannot do anything like "add to playlist"

Plugin and webapp the steps are
  • install the plugin. Put the zip on a usb stick. Pluck the stick to the dune, with the remote control and the dune file browser go to the stick where you put the zip. Push ENTER when you are on the zip file and the plugin will install. This step you do once for all then you forget about it
  • Use DMM as usual and export your menu.
  • Create a favorite for your menu folder (that appears as the dmm logo in your dune file browser
  • To launch the webapp, on the web browser of your android device you enter (and then bookmark) http://ip_address_of_your_dune/plugins/dmm/go.html?menu=name_of_your_menu on the screen with the DMM logo and your menu name underneath, you click on the logo and the web app will start. On iOS when you have a web page and you add it to your home screen you can then launch in fullscreen mode. Is there a similar way of doing for Android ?

Ideas for improvements I'd love to hear them. The more feedback I get the more I think I need the make DMM UI simpler

error message if you click on a picture in the image section and don't click on an album to assign the art to: could tell me more I haven't fully understood the use case here

Hi Al,

Thanks for a very nice application, you must have put in a lot of effort into making it. Much appreciated!

I have just started testing and found a few problems I need some assistance with and just let you know about.

1. When I add a new menu it adds the music folder twice in "Dune path to the Music Folder". Example: nfs://192.168.0.20/volume1/music/music. I can remove it manually but every time I click in a text field it's added again.

2. My setup includes a Synology NAS which has both the menu files and the music on different shares. The menu files are mounted using smb and the music is mounted using nfs. Like this:

Menu: \\192.168.0.20\home\Menu

Music: nfs://192.168.0.20:/volume1/music

Problem is, when I turn on my Dune HD Base 3D and try to access my music using the DMC it's unable to reach it. When I then go to sources on my Dune I'm unable to access my shares. The smb shares are unavailable and my nfs share is empty.

I then have to reboot Dune. If I after reboot go to sources and access my shares, both nfs shares and smb shares works as expected. After browsing the files from Dune I start DMC and it's now able to reach all files, until I shut down and restart the Dune. Then I have to go through the same procedure again. :s Any clue? I also found this in my Synology which looks a bit weird.

3. Export and scan takes very long time. I use the default settings which takes several hours. I have approximately 10 000 files, network is gigabit and my rig is fairly powerful (4Ghz Intel, 8Gb RAM, SSD etc). What would be the best way to improve speed? I'm thinking of putting the menu files on an internal SSD on the DUNE instead, could that speed things up? What times should I expect when working with 10 000 files?

Thanks again for a nice app!

/ Thomas

Hi Thomas, glad you found DMM useful !

to your points

When I add a new menu it adds the music folder twice in "Dune path to the Music Folder". Example: nfs://192.168.0.20/volume1/music/music: could you send me a screenshot of it (may be via email @ albertocasale@yahoo.com) ? Not sure I fully understand it.

I have a Synology too and a very similar setup.
you say " when I turn on my Dune HD Base 3D and try to access my music using the DMC it's unable to reach it"
is this something that happens only for DMM or a common phenomenon ? BTW to be able to use DMC you need in DMM to check the box about DMC compatibility (in 1.2.7, name is different in 1.2.8). This way DMM will create a .DMMplaylists folder under the root of your music folder. It is only way I found to make playlists with images working with DMC.

Tonight I can make a snapshot of my Synology and post it but definitely your is weird with music music.....

My test database has 2300 songs. When scanning from the mirror library I have on my PC (so DMM and library on the same PC), it takes 1' or less (depending if it already extracted some intag cover images). Export depends essentially from 3 parameters
  • how many albums
  • how many artists
  • if you want the albums of an artist to show only his/her songs and not the all of them in case of an album with multiple artists with few songs each (with this options activated, DMM needs to create more "albums")

Anyway for my test database a full export takes few minutes. But in my case all is local to the PC, I then copy it all to the NAS)

If scan is too long, you might consider having a mirror of your library on a USB disk attached to your PC
If export is too long, you might consider exporting to a removable device on your PC that you then connect to the dune or to export to your PC Hard Disk and then just do a bulk copy over to NAS

Even better, I made a screen recording illustrating the problem. I followed your guide on the last page in the manual.

Yes, I also have Zappiti installed and it does not show the same behaviour. But my video archive is mounted using smb whereas my music is mounted using nfs.

When my music archive was mounted using smb it was also working, at least from DMC. The reason I switched to nfs was that I was unable to play songs from the Dune gui, I think it was because I was unable to have 2 smb mounts from the same source (menu and music). But it's a bit odd Zappiti is working with this setup..

When I first access my nfs share from Dune gui DMM is workin fine, both from DMC and Dune gui. I'm starting to suspect this might be a bug in my NAS.

Thanks for your tips, I'll do some more testing! :)

Cheers,

 Thomas

HI Thomas,

I looked into the menu configuration issue (your video). Actually it was my mistake in the documentation. The mount should be only volume1 and not volume1/music as music is also the share name.

Thinking about your other issue. When I had a DMM menu on the NAS and booted the Dune, the NAS filesystem wasn't mounted either. This is actually normal as the Dune only mounts the network filesystems when you solicit them. By "solicit" I mean opening a favorite that is on the NAS or go to NAS with the network browser. DMC (and DMM webapp), only sends IP commands via HTTP. This isn't enough to "wake up" a network location.

You can try to make the DMM menu one of your favorite and make it the "startup app to launch" preference. In this case the Dune will boot and then open the DMM menu; DMC will then be able to access it.

hope this makes sense to you and helps

Hi Al,

Thanks for your suggestion, I tried that but it didn't work. When I load the menu by autostart it will only mount the smb share since that's were the menu is located. The music is on the nfs share and will therefore remain unreachable. if the problem would be as you suggested.

Since Zappiti is working fine without autostart I thought the problem must be somewhere else. I did some more research and found this thread: http://www.mpcclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28190

It's exactly the same problem as I got. So I tried what's suggested in the thread and now it actually works!

I also updated my Synology DSM to the latest version, that got rid of the weird music, music, music, music... error.

I'll give you more feedback on your application when I've done some more testing. But as I already wrote, it looks really nice!

Cheers,

 Thomas

Just to be clear--are you saying there is no way to pick a couple of songs and an album and have it play? I can only select one thing at a time or am I not understanding?

If you're referring to DMC, it can only literally "launch media url". This means it lets you browse a dune_folder.txt enabled folder as if you were using a RC and watching the TV. All you can do with RC you can do with DMC. Everything is predefined though in the dune_folder.txt. Playing a song means that in the dune_folder there is a reference (media_url) to that song or to a folder containing songs (a playlist) or to a m3u file.
You can't build things dynamically (as of my knowledge)

In DMM tv or webapp it is pretty much the same. In the release after 1.2.8 I'll introduce
Custom albums and Selections.
A custom album is actually a playlist (created on the pc) where you specify a cover, etc making it looking like any other album.
A selection is a collection of albums (real or custom), artists, genres. A selection imply a playlist of all songs it contains and can be played in its entirety.

In conclusion with DMM (on tv, via dmc or the webapp) you can play today
- a song of an album ( actually meaning you start the album from that song, the others will follow when it finishes)
- an entire album
- all songs of an artist
- all songs of a genre

The webapp makes also simpler to activate shuffle and gapless playback.

What you can't do
- start something and then keep browsing and add stuff to be played next ( ie managing a playlist on the fly). I'm looking into possibly adding this feature for future releases of the webapp alongside other features

Did I address your question ?
Yes, 100%. It looks as if I need to find another music player (besides the Dune). I use Zap (and you answered a question about playlists there as well). I'm sorry to say this is a really important thing to be able to do--this is the whole advantage of playing music on the computer for me.

Thanks for all the time you've put into this.

Here are some of the suggestions I had:

I did discover the problem with the "," but the only solution is re-do a new menu. There is no way to modify the existing settings (that I could discover) and change the choice of separators. You should turn off the "," for the title as default--it will only mess up bands like: Blood, Sweat and Tears, Earth, Wind & Fire, etc.

So, I went to create a new menu--you should have a button to "create new" rather than just typing over the existing menu. Also, you should change the word from "select" to "browse".

I didn't realize there were different theme templates--I assumed you just modified default, but once I tried a few I saw that the art looks really nice!

Anyway, good luck with the program.

Thanks again,
Brian

Hi Brian,

glad to have helped you out on this. I share your concerns; the Dune is not a feature-rich music device in that respect. I have a Logitech Squeezebox and the playlist manipulation is possible.

I might also have overlooked some of the Dune possibilities. Is there anyone knowing how to do "Play-next" or "Append to playlist" kind of things ?
On TV definitely not because when you play something you cannot even move back and keep browsing without stopping what's being played.
What I will try to do on the DMM webapp is to build these features by actually managing a playlist myself, meaning monitoring song ends and start next. I'll do a quick a prototype and report here about feasibility

Thanks also for all your suggestions, I'll implement them in this and future releases

Alberto

P.S. out of curiosity, my answer about Zap video playlist was solving your problem ? Never actually tried it smile.gif

I didn't.

Last night I bought all the components to build a new HTPC (~$500) and once it is built I will start using XBMC again. I had resolution issues, restarting problems and other issues with my old HTPC but I was using component video output (which is no longer necessary in my system). XBMC has improved and so should system stability with new components and only HDMI video (and performance).

I have a Sonos Connect ($350) and the Dune HD H1(?) w/ internal USB ($350). They both have limitations. I am hoping the $500 investment will allow me to do everything I need with the two pieces, but better (and in a single device).

The dune is small and fanless and offers good picture, but even with Zapitti I find I have to go through extra steps to get it working. My primary use of the Dune is TV watching. The problem is I have to constantly load the software on my main computer, mark things watched, mark things new and re-run the scan and then import. With XBMC this can all be automatic. Also, it seemed that XBMC was faster (I don't have an SSD in the Dune).

The Sonos is missing the "flash" of having large cover art (even on my 10" tablet) and does not play hi-res files. I've looked at a few Android offerings to control music on XBMC and they seem to be what I'm looking for. Also, there is the possibility of using Jriver (which some report offers better sound quality).

At the time I ditched the HTPC I was happy with the choice and operation of the two devices has been great except for the limitations mentioned above. It is finally time to try and eliminate them.

Hi all,
After few weeks of beta test, v 1.2.8 is ready for prime time (a big thanks to all the people who helped me testing it!). Of course I cannot say it is bug free so any problem post a message or write me an email (albertocasale@yahoo.com). Make sure to have a look at User Guide before starting (revamped to be more clear). If you used a previous DMM release and already had a lot of custom images/backgrounds, etc. don’t worry the user guide will explain you how to upgrade and get them back.

User manual, program + plugin : https://www.dropbox.com/sh/4iojcaq6drtgky8/DGlQti-F0Y/Dune_Music_Manager

Video introducing DMM 1.2.8 WebAPP: http://youtu.be/SY_TA8CxF_8

What’s new:

DMM PC App
  • Several bug fixes
  • A new great template from Tightrope
  • In the initial menu configuration it is possible to influence how DMM will handle the tags of your music files. In particular you can
    • Define the set of separators to apply (the first separator character present in the tag will be used)
    • Define which tag to use to create artists and some basic rules
    • Create an artist also for the composers. In the UI you’ll see them all under Artists and you can filter them using the filter button. USE THIS OPTION WITH CARE. If you don’t know about your tags and/or do not care about having also the composers … leave the option unchecked or you’ll risk having hundreds of Artists which aren’t important for you and the export time will be much much longer.

DMM web extender plug-in
A tiny little plugin to install on your Dune (check the user guide) to be able to use the DMM WebApp.

DMM WebApp
It has been the bigger effort of this release. When exporting a menu, DMM creates in the same folder the html, css, js files needed to run on your mobile device a web app that will allow to
  • Browse the library by Albums, Genres, Artists
  • Search the library by albumartist, artist name, composer name, genre name, year, song title, album title
  • Play your albums/playlists and control the playout (play/pause, stop, seek, prev/next, shuffle on/off, gapless On/off)

NOTE: for the WebApp to work properly you need to check “Mobile App compatibility” in the configuration of the menu. If you want to play your albums gapless you also need to check the “Playlist with images” in the main template page.
The best user experience is reached when you install your WebApp as a fullscreen application by putting a link on your home page. This works on iOS. I’ve no experience on Android. BTW some users reported that on Android swiping through pages is a bit difficult (I’m working on it).

Of course DMM still works with the great DMC app from Babachan !

Hopefully the (short) user guide gives you all you need to set this up and run it successfully.

Being Xmas behind the corner here is my wish list for DMM improvements/features. I'd welcome your input to decide what are the most useful things to do next. Some are mine some come already from your feedback

DMM PC
  1. Simpler, less crowed UI
  2. Simpler Menu configuration panel that can also be edited without deleting/recreating a menu
  3. Templates new options
    1. Album covers with title (like artists)
    2. Sorting criteria on a per page basis (albums, genres, single artist) instead of global
    3. Artists wall with only names and no pictures
    4. Use sortname instead of real name in the artist label to respect A-Z appearance
  4. Custom Albums (i.e. playlists)
  5. Selections (i.e. user defined collections of real/custom Albums, Artists, Genres)
  6. More than one Music Folder to scan
  7. Gracenote integration for additional image/cover source

DMM WebApp
  1. More Flexible « Now Playing » management (possible only for non-gapless and subject to check if feasible)
    • Add to next
    • Append
    • Current Playlist editing (move, delete)
  2. Option to have List instead of icons wall with alphabetical index bar
  3. Lyrics (if possible)
  4. Improved swiping and in general more reactive UI (new release JQuery Mobile framework)

Al,
I really liked new release DMM. The interface is cool and gave great facelift to primitive Dune interface.Scraping for images for artists is really good even for Indian movies. I was waiting for long time to be able to play music without needing projector on. New web application fulfills that dream. I am able to use Dune as universal player. The tool is stable as well. Thanks for all your effort and time.

For me high priority from the list you have mentioned are simple menu configuration and user selected play list. I also wanted to consider the following.

1. To show more meta data about each track. I think once Dune starts playing, you may not have control and not sure if it is possible to show on TV screen. I believe I saw only following meta data from Dune but need to verify again.
one of the artist
name of song or track
year
file name
It would help to see all artists, album artist, composer as well.

2. When I select artist, template is only showing 3 or 4 alubms on TV screens. Then I have to move the remote arrow button to see more of the albums by the artist. However, I have more space on TV screen to show all of albums by the artist. May be I need to play with other templates. Not sure if any of the template already supports it. It should be customizable for number of albums

Thanks,
Sukumar
