Recommendations for Speakers to Pair With Sony STR-DN1040

Hi Everyone,

I was looking to get recommendations for budget speakers that would pair well with the Sony STR-DN1040 that are good for an apartment.

For anyone who is not familiar with the Sony STR-DN1040, the power is rated at 165W x 7 @ 8 ohms 1kHz 0.9% THD 1ch. driven. I notice that this is at 1kHz so I am unsure what that translates to in normal applications.

The room isn't that large, relatively small apartment which currently is using this layout of furniture. I'm willing to make adjustments if people think I can gain anything from making some adjustments. The TV is a 50" Panasonic Plasma TV, it's on the older side but it still works well. I would say the couch to the TV is about 10'–12' .

Currently, I have been looking at the Energy Take Classic 5.1 system which would come to $349.99.

With this all said, I have the following questions I hope you all would be willing to help with:
  • What speakers around the $350 price point would you recommend?
  • What gauge speaker wire would you recommend?
  • Are banana plugs worth the additional expense?
  • Are there any adjustments you would recommend related to room layout / furniture layout that would increase the home theater experience?

Thank you all for your time and assistance.

If you have room the Pioneer speakers at Best Buy would be a better deal.

Get two pairs of the BS-22 bookshelf speakers for $90/pr
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/4%22+Bookshelf+Speakers+%28Pair%29/5086955.p;jsessionid=8048F483896A0F6C9718AA5DF99D376D.bbolsp-app01-109?id=1218610014045&skuId=5086955&st=pioneer%20speakers&cp=1&lp=9

The matching C22 center is $70
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dual+4%22+Center-Channel+Speaker/5086891.p?id=1218610015437&skuId=5086891&st=pioneer%20speakers&cp=1&lp=14

So far you're at $250 for 4 bookshelf speakers and a center.

Pioneer also has a 8" subwoofer for $112

If you want a 10" subwoofer the Dayton sub-1000 is a good price at $109

If you need smaller size speakers get the NHT SuperZero speakers for $60ea and add one of the above subwoofers.

Thanks for the tips! Wouldn't mind using the Pioneers in the front (center, two front and sub) but would like the option to wall/ceiling mount if I choose in the future. Do you have any suggestions for that? Sorry to complicate things.

Thanks for your advice!

Those Pioneer speakers are not really made to be wall/ceiling mounted. They have a curved cabinet.

You should have specified that earlier.

The NHT speakers are easy to wall or ceiling mount. The link I provided earlier has pictures with a ceiling mount bracket.

I agree I should have and I apologize that I did not. You are 100% correct.

Found some wall shelves I can use on amazon. Will allow me to "wall mount" the pioneers. Thanks again!!!!
