1.3 vs 1.1 gain on a W1070 @ 130"

Trying to decide which way to go on a screen, hoping you guys can help.

I am looking at a BenQ W1070 with a 130" diag screen at a 12'6" throw distance. The room it is in is a 3.5 wall home theater with the half wall being a built in wall/bar that connects to a game room. During the day there is very little light from the left side of the room where the bar is, not enough that you could easily read a book in it, and at night it is almost pitch black to where you can't see your hand in front of your face at full reach. The room has a lighter brown eggshell type paint. light gloss (satin).

Trying to decide how much gain for the screen in this situation. I have read the 1070 is like a light cannon, plenty of power at this distance, and I don't want to go too high (1.5+) on a screen and end up with it being too tough to watch. At the same time I am worried about the bit of ambient light and paint.

Thinking around 1.3 to balance the room with the projector.

Projector Central with this configuration says Image Brightness of 23fL on a 1.3 gain 16:9 130" screen at 12'6" throw is for a room with ambient light.

Thoughts?

I had the same concern for use with my Epson 3010 which I believe is rated just a bit higher in lumens than the 1070. 120" 16:9 screen with a throw of 13 1/2'. I'm glad I stuck with a 1.3 gain screen. Looks great. Remember if it's too bright you can always tone it down some and lamp will dim some with use of course. Especially if you're gonna enjoy 3D (and with a 130" screen) once in awhile you'll appreciate the brightness. JMHO, hope it's helpful.

BTW, my room light condition's sound comparable to yours.

I've been projecting my w1070 onto a white wall for about a month now at about 12 ft away. While it's worked okay, I've seen most people recommend screens. Everyone mentions all these different gain screens, and I was wondering where everyone goes to buy them? All i see on amazon are those elite screens and i'm not even sure what gain they are, i think 1.0 gain, but not sure.

Most of the matte white elites I've seen are 1.1 gain. From my personal experience I would certainly go with the matte white 1.3 gain but elite does not have a 1.3 gain that I have found. I have a Favi matte white 1.3 gain and the image is excelent. 3D looks great on it too. You can also check out screens att HTdepot.com. Look at thier Focupix screens. The prices are great and the material is the same as the Favi screens.

This is the screen I've been using for over 2 1/2 years. http://www.htdepot.com/Focupix-Flexio-16-9-Electric-Motorized-Screen-125-p/20028.htm

Never had any wrinkles or waves. Operates perfectly.smile.gif

Yea, I'm sure it's the same material. It even has the same remote. Great screen image for the price. You can't beat it. I just ordered the fixed 115" matte white 1.3.

Those look like some good screens for the price. The one thing I'd be worried about is waves on a non-tension screen especially the 125" one. Sounds like yours is holding up well.

I understand your concern. I had them before I got mine as well. I kinda hate recommending things because maybe you might get a bad one. All I can say is mine has been great. It does have just the slightest bit of "curl-in" along the outside edge of the screen but you have to be standing to the side and looking for it to see it. It's been like that since new and has never worsened. Never any wrinkles or waves of any kind though.
Best of luck with your decision.
