Adding WinXP to Win7 Homegroup

I currently have a Homegroup set up between my Win7 tower and my Win8 laptop via a router. I was given a Dell WinXP PC that has an ATI video card with HDMI ouput. I want to setup the WinXP PC in our bedroom and stream video files from the Win7 tower. I'll just be using the VLC Player in the WinXP PC to play AVI, FLV, MP4, DVD VOB and MOV files on the Win7's hard drive.

I plan to connect the WinXP PC to the router using cat5e cable. Will WinXP network with the Win7/Win8 Homegroup OK? If so, what are the steps to do it?

Thanks,
Skylark

Win-XP does not support Homegroups. You will have to use standard file sharing which is not simple to set up on Win-7.

Ouch!
If anyone has networked a WinXP PC to a Win7 or Win8 network, please let me know how you did it.

Thanks,

That link looks extremely promising. After I receive the cat5e cable I ordered and get things connected, I'll give the info a try.

Thanks so much for helping out,

You should do just fine. It really isn't very hard. You just need to know what to do, and Microsoft explains it well.
