The very first sub I looked at was the SB12-NSD but dismissed it as it appears to be much lighter than the other subs, and I was concerned that even two of them would not give me the output of the Empire.
I'm not bagging on Hsu subs. I was key on the ULS-15
but something in my reading turned my head away from that line of subs. My gaze fell on SVS, PSA and Rythmik and I've not been swayed since. I cannot give you a rational reply as to why I looked away. Based on past research, in my opinion, the ULS-15 is an excellent choice. My understanding, although I cannot get an answer from the posted website information (I don't see it posted), the ULS-15 is sealed and will easily match up with the Empire and meets your 18X18X18 size requirements. Also, it has a proven wireless feature that is a benefit when it comes to wires and WAF.
(end tables can be easily raised with heels placed under each leg)
The sealed PSA subs are an option, but I'm not married to to the idea of keeping the Empire in the mix. The sealed PSAs might also be a near field option as they MIGHT be just small enough to slide under my end tables. I would have to go wireless on those, as there is a fireplace on the left wall. I just bought a wireless unit from Parts Express, but have not tried it out yet. Maybe test that out using my BIC F-12 just to see if wireless is an option....
In truth, the ULS-15's are a better match than the SB12-NSD's as you're mixing the 15" drivers of the Empire with 12" drivers of the SB12-NSD. The Empire, at minimum, has twice the output of two SB12-NSD's. Two ULS-15's would be the equal of the Empire and they come with their own wireless module.
Damn, now even another thing to think about
Keep in mind, the Empire has 15" drivers and an approximation, in the simple, it takes two 12" drivers to equal the output of one 15" driver.
Wanted to mention again that I edited an earlier post on the cubic feet I'm looking at as some are still mentioning 4-5K. It's more like 6K, and vaulted ceiling in the L/R and kitchen so some substantial space to work with. That's why I was initially looking at a ported solution.
Keep in mind, ported does not play and get along well with sealed. You already have a sealed, dual, opposing, 15" driver, single cabinet (co-location) subwoofer. Marrying up a pair of ULS-15's with the Empire is the approximate output of eight, 12" drivers. With four 15" drivers, banging away in your room, the ULS-15's set (near-field) under your sofa end tables, using the included wireless feature, the wife is going be happy, you're going be happy and if you invite your neighbors over, who live three doors down, on a movie night, they're going be happy. Remember, they have to bring "decent" beer and microwave popcorn.
In truth, everything you're posting screams out, a pair of ULS-15's are the solution you're looking for.
My opinion is based on the experience of going through the angst you're currently experiencing. Hands down, based on experiencing the angst you're currently dealing with, I'm convinced, the ULS-15 is the solution you're looking for. Any other choice is going mess with the continuum of your universe. You're on your own as to budget issues.
