In this uncertain world, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his band of survivors must not only fight the dead, but also face a whole new fear: the living. In this 16 episode season, Rick and his fellow survivors continue to seek refuge in a desolate and post-apocalyptic world and soon discover that there are greater forces to fear than just the walking dead. The struggle to survive has never been so perilous. This season also introduces new characters, including the Governor (David Morrissey) and fan-favorite Michonne (Danai Gurira), along with her zombie pets.
Where to now? Being a big fan of AMC's The Walking Dead, which I reviewed (Season 1 & Season 2), this is all I could think. Could The Walking Dead endure another season of looking for a place to live and be safe while fighting Zombies? It did survive losing the shows front runner, Frank Darabont (Shawshank Redemption, The Mist) before season 2 ,coming up smelling like roses with the impressive Season 2. But I was concerned that it might fall victim to redundancy. Thankfully my fears were unfounded and Season 3 kept me on the edge of my seat.
After losing "The Farm" to a major zombie attack at the end of Season 2, we find Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and crew, yet again looking for asylum. At the same time Andrea (Laurie Holden), who was separated from the group, finds another survivor in Michonne (Danai Gurira). She and Michonne stumble upon a well fortified town of survivors called "Woodbury". The residence of Woodbury are doing a good job of keeping some semblance of normality, thought never forgetting about the threat outside its walls. Led by the Governor (David Morrissey), Woodbury is not the utopia Andrea was hoping as a threat that is almost worse than the Zombies themselves build for Rick and his band of survivors.
The Walking Dead Season 3 had the all prerequisites of past seasons. The amazing effects from effects guru Gregory Nicotero's (who also directed a few episodes) KNB EFX group, convincing multi-strand story-arcs and a great grasp on the human condition. Besides the horror and drama of seasons past, season 3 become somewhat of a thriller and kept me sucked in from frame one. Fans should not be disappointed. If you have yet to see season 1 or 2, it's time to get moving as the Blu-ray sets are great--and Season 4 starts in October!

The Walking Dead: Season 3 comes to Blu-ray disc from Anchor Bay/Starz featuring 1080p AVC encoded video that has an average bitrate of 24.2 mbps Dolby TrueHD MA 7.1 lossless surround sound that has a average bitrate of 3.3 mbps.
There is very little, if any deviation in the aesthetic of the show, the sound design as well as the quality of the transfer Anchor Bay delivers on Blu-ray. My Thoughts are the same as the Season 1 and 2 releases which I am quoting below.
"Anchor Bay delivers a faithful transfer of AMC's 'The Walking Dead'. You better love film grain as this was shot on 16mm film stock, and the grain is pretty heavy here...you can almost sink your teeth into it. Grain can be a double edged sword, sometimes it can get overbearing but sometimes it is beautiful, adding to the look and feel of a film. Here it added to the gritty despair and depression of the situation. It was not the most detailed or crisp HD broadcast I have seen, but was passable. This translates directly to its Blu-ray release, showing that Anchor Bay was true to the source. Colors seem spot on from what I have on MY DVR, with flesh-tones taking on a natural but slightly pale tone. Black levels sure do shine as do the shadow details. There really is nothing to fault here, as it looks as it should and was filmed to look. The audio track was a step above, with a rich and dynamic sound-scape, having no issues with dialogue and a very nice surround presentation. Most impressive was the palpable concussion of gunshots and other dynamic sound effects as well as LFE that dug room shaking deep, adding another level to this superb lossless Dolby TrueHD."

The Walking Dead: Season 3 rose to the challenge delivering fans another great season. If you have yet to dive into The Walking Dead, there is no better way then with Anchor-Bays great Blu-ray releases. The sets are a must have for collectors, and there are a few versions to choose from (see picture above). I do wish there were some documentaries on the effects and even a story comparison between the show and the graphic novels of which it is based. Even with its iffy amount of extras this is still highly recommended!
