He is on WHS2011 + FLEXRAID like me I think - We did our servers about the same time. (I've rebuilt and expanded mine a few times in comparison). I only pointed out to him because I felt like I was the only one that knew.
Last I knew he had a i3 2100 (He got it for $79 so he upgraded from the lower CPU) in a normal consumer build. (simple Antec 300 case)
Your typical high value, easy to build WHS+ FLEXRAID server.
He has free guides how to do it:
My guess is his experience is likely to cover 90% of what people want, and what people want to spend when figuring out a media server solution.
I don't think his HDD's are numerous enough that he needs a SATA card (Most Motherboards have 8 Sata ports) yet- and he does not need HOT SWAP to do something that takes him 5 minutes with a phillips screw driver.
In comparision to me his TB amount is smaller, and his server is more affordable. I started on basically the same exact thing (mine probably was lower and cheaper originally)
He stayed with the consumer tower I think ($50 or less) while I went all the way with the Norco 4220 hotswap server chassis and dual SATA 3 SAS 8087 cards (16 SATA3 PORTS + 4 on my motherboard = 20 bays)
