Building my first HT, please help!

Hi everyone!

I am seeking your advise as I am a rookie when it comes to a HT or any audio setup for that matter. My friend was telling me how cool having a 5.1 surround sound system can be and so I started looking into it. So far, I've purchased 2 pairs of Klipsch B-20 bookshelf speakers. I got a great deal at the local Fry's and I figured I could just use these as my front L/R as well as my surrounds.

I am now looking to purchase a receiver, a sub and a center speaker. I have heard that Harman Kardon receivers go well with Klipsch speakers... however from the reviews it seems like Harman Kardon is over priced and is not the same as before. My budget is pretty modest. I'd like to not spend more than $500 on the remaining items on my list. I can look for good deals so please feel free to suggest items that may even be over my budget. I can always try to find a good deal or put in a little extra money. My goal is to just have a impressive 5.1 HT experience.

Thanks!!!

Your best bet to stay within your budget is to return to Fry's and see what else they have on clearance, ideally keeping with a Klipsch center speaker. Although we (ie. AVScience) sell Klipsch speakers and subs as well as various brands of AVRs, you'd have to increase your budget by at least $200 if buying new. You may also want to consider refurbished AVRs at Accessories4Less which would come with a reduced, 1 year warranty for the AVRs.

Frys has the RTi6 bookshelf and CSi5 center on sale for $99.99. If Frys was close to me, I would buy those.

Any brand of receiver will work pretty much the same with the Klipsch speakers.

I agree with the comment about getting a matching center at Fry's. The C-20 is a good match for your speakers.

I also agree with the comment about upping your budget.

Getting a Denon receiver on sale for $200, plus the center and a sub is definitely going to be more than $500.

How much do you think you can go to?

Thank you all for your advice. I will keep an eye out for the C-20 center channel speaker. I know Newegg.com had a good deal on those for S149.99 recently so I can wait till I can find a price like that.

I can also try to up my budget to $650 or so. I heard good things about Denon receivers and my coworker also suggested getting Denons. Is there a solid model for a 5.1? Ideally would like something that's a bit user friendly w/ Airplay as well. I have a PS3 that I can use for DLNA so that's not a must in the receiver. I will also be connecting my Dish Network box to the receiver. The HK 2650 is available for $350.The Denon 1613 is available at $328.

Finally, for the sub, the Polk PSW10 look likes a $100 and has good reviews. Is Polk a good brand to go with as far as subwoofers?

Hi guys, I just wanted to update you with my purchases so far, only the sub remains actually. I got the Klipsch B-20 bookshelves for the four corners. I got the RC-52 II for the center speaker. I got the Denon AVR X1000 for my 5.1 receiver. The only item that remains is the ".1". I was thinking about the BIC PL-200. I am not looking to spend more than $200 on the sub because that will keep my entire HT system under $1k, which was the max budget I started with. Any suggestions for a nice sub will be greatly appreciated! Thank you once again. Oh also, please let me know what you think of the items I've purchased so far. Would it make a good HT system when put together?
