I think 20% (not 35-40) is pretty standard on paradigm as well.

If you upgrade to wood veneer, I agree. But then how much more is that?

But they'll never be "sexy". biggrin.gif

With wood veneers they can be good looking boxes.

I have Rocket 1000's with the bigfoot center and the av123 surrounds (can't remember which model) in 7.1, now at my parent's house. Since upgraded to B&W CM9's then now to MartinLogan electrostats, Theos and Stage Center. Went back to listen to the AV123 Rockets and it sounded like there's a wet blanket over them!

The M80- VP180 combo in rosewood would get my vote (after 3 M80's).

A unique thing about Rythmik is that you can buy a kit version for any of their subs. Basically all you need is their kit, your own cabinet and acoustic stuffing and you're good to go and build a Rythmik. For example, the Single DS1510 high power driver kit (scroll down) will build that E15HP (or F15HP or FV15HP). The reason I mention this is, if you love the form factor of cylinder subs and you're considering DIY, I can see no reason why you couldn't use a Rythmik kit. You know it "will just work".

Haha... no worries, thought so. Just having a bit of a side convo with jb. biggrin.gif

You bring up an interesting point Valtyr. Assuming I had a real sub what would I "lose" going from Towers to Bookshelf speakers? I've never been convinced that bookshelf speakers could "compete" with towers but maybe I've been wrong all these years. Does anyone have a list of Pro's and Con's comparing and contrasting Towers vs Bookshelf ? Surely that thread has to be archived by now?

.

Mini-update since I moved from San Jose, CA to Seattle, WA ...

I ended up ordering the Denon 3313CI since I was able to get it off Amazon for ~ $650 with free shipping via Prime. I love buying last year's high end at this year's discount! It will be here this week. smile.gif The X4000, at $1300, is out of my budget although I was a little sad at having to pass on the SubEQ. Guess it is "subwoofer crawl" for optimal sub placement and using my SPL meter for balance. On the positive side it means more money towards my mains -- or TWO good subwoofers eek.gif (I ordered a cheap Dayton Audio Sub 1200 to tie me over until I get can a "real" bass system like the SVS, HSU, etc.) I'm *also* itching to build a sonosub. We'll see!

I'm taking another *really* good look at the EMP E55Ti Towers since I won't have a chance to get my Rockets back for a few months. I love like how the EMPs look. And the price is fantastic! Will they be a "step-up" from the Rockets? Dunno, but I'll find out in a few months IF I go with them -- in the mean-time I "need" to enjoy *something*!

I was able to snag an old Swan Diva center channel for $100 off craigslist before I moved! cool.gif Checking Craiglist in the Seattle area has nothing good listed for speakers or subs (for now.) frown.gif

I took another look at the Salk SongTowers. I'm not a fan of the asymmetric look with the drivers + mesh grill cloth on top -- I like the speaker grill covering the *whole* speaker for aesthetics. The cherry + rosewood finish does look nice though!

Thanks for mentioning the Rythmiks. I've been looking at subs in the other forum and saw the LV12R mentioned. Will check out their sub lines.

I'm still curious how bookshelf speakers compare to tower speakers ... yeah, yeah, Search The Fine Forum smile.gif

Edit: Fixed awkward grammar, added Rythmiks.

Thanks for the info on the Rockets + ML SubSolar! That's the problem with "audio" -- you don't realize how "bad" your existing audio setup is until you hear something much better then it is hard to go back! cool.gif I still miss heading over to my brother's friend and listening to his vinyl + tube amp + Tannoy horns ... frown.gif

Ooooh, those MartinLogan electrostatics looks *awesome* (I can probably live with the top angle of the bottom cabinet being "reversed" looking. OCD Twitch. biggrin.gif

Looks like I found my "upgrade" path: Rockets --lateral--> EMPs --upgrade--> ML. The ML's are definitely out-of-budget for this year ... but I could see myself upgrading to them in a year or two! I've always wanted electrostatics after my brother told me about them.

Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions!

Ordered the EMP Tek E55Ti in Red Burl for $347/ea today!

Rythmik F15 sub is also coming next week. :-)

I'll let everyone know what I think of the sound + finish when they arrive next week.

Edit: Added update about sub.

^^^ Hey that's great news!!! I love it when a plan comes together. smile.gif

Exciting times ahead... I'm pretty sure you'll be thrilled with those, particularly the Rythmik. I'll keep an eye out for your thoughts when you've got them all set up.

Sorry I missed your earlier post re the Denon 3313 bargain - very good work. I wouldn't worry too much about not getting XT32/SubEQ. It was only a few short years ago that the flagship AVR's had XT and everyone was perfectly happy. As you say, placement is the key.

Good luck and have fun!

Oh! Is a monster EMPTek centre channel on the radar?

Me too... After reading your post, I went a'hunting!wink.gif Alas, insert "used" above. According to camelcamelcamel, Amazon has not sold it for less than $799 since its introduction, not even by 3rd parties. The used prices have come below that, though oddly Amazon's Warehouse Deals repack prices are still high as if it were last year.

Thanks for sharing! Looks like they've taken on a female persona, so I'd say the "sexy" brief has definitely been met. biggrin.gif

I'll keep an eye out for your listening impressions and the arrival of the Rythmik.
