Denon avr-5803....should i get this behind my mean momma's back? - Page 2

If you are going to use the AVR-5803 for video, I don't believe you can pass 1080p through the component video ports. None (or close to) of the upconverting DVD players will send 1080p out their component video ports anyway. If you are bypassing the AVR-5803 video section and using HDMI, then you'll be OK.

The one thing you have not mentioned are speakers. Are your speakers a good match for the 5803A?

LIke many before i owned the 5800 and 5803, you are making a bad call as many have pointed out. I now own the AVP and POA (bigger brother of the 5308). But if you refuse to listen to peers who are trying to advice you tech has moved on i doubt you will let anything small like convincing your wife stop you.

In general its amazing how this 'old receivers' are better myth continues mostly pointing to the weight of the device while ignoring moore law effects on anything digital.

I would not pay more than $300 for a 5803 myself but i guess this myth has kept the price up.

Daniel.

hmmmmm .... that's kind of funny.... how did you get your 704 to put out hdmi signals... inquiring minds want to know so I can do the same thing on my pioneer.

that's easy.

1) laserdisc player on hdmi?
- i'm currently using a cheap hdmi scaler, hooked it up to s-video. and hdmi on my tv

2) my speakers

fronts: kenwood jl-555, 140 watt peak , 8 ohms (they are good)
centre: kenwood crs-155, 100 watt peak, 8 ohms (not too bad)
surrounds: sony ss-msp67 series, 100 watts, 6 ohms (puny junk)
sub: kenwood sw-303.

3) $300 for the 5803?

i prefer one in better shape, i'd pay no less than 400.

so in a few years, i would replace the centre and surrounds with klipsch speakers.

wouldn't actually call that "directly hdmi".... :-) I think you seemed to be "concernec" about the "extra connections" using an outboard ac3 demod... seems like you already have a "few" anyways. You could quite easily hunt down a "second hand pre/pro" that does your AC-3 demod and processing accordingly and feed it into your existing setup.

got my eye on a almost new pioneer elite vsx 59txi, put down a bid for 295.
quick question: how high can the volume go? example is -80db to 0db or -100 db to 80db.
