Cambridge Audio S30 or Infinity Primus 163? - Page 2

I went with the S30's over the Infinitys. I did have a pair of the the S30's several weeks ago. Dark oak. But the finish was defective and I sent them back for a replacement pair and the replacements were also defective. I loved the way they sounded though but I didn't want to try a third pair. This time I ordered black. What impressed me about the S30's was how uncluttered and open everything sounded. Does that make sense? I don't know how else to describe it.

jerrymb, I have read about your experience a few times. I'm shocked that both pairs were defective, I haven't seen the oak but my black ones have always looked nice. It sounds like your black ones may be good. I hope so. There is a very obvious seam on the bottom, but that is my only aesthetic gripe.

I think that is what I appreciate most about the S30's. The soundstage is huge and the detail and clarity between all levels of sound is unreal for such an inexpensive speaker. There is no clutter, no muddy-ness, just clean crisp sounds. I love them.

I noticed the seam on the bottom and it kind of took me by surprise, All the speakers I've owned regardless of price never had a seam on them. I'm sure there's a reason for the seam but I can't figure out why. Would 24 inch stands be too low for the S30's? Or would 31 inch stands be better?

Honestly, I'd estimate the seam is just lack of effort on CA's part. They must have spent their budget on sound quality over looks.

Let me see how tall mine are... They're 37" tall.

There is no maximum or minimum height for stands, you just want the tweeter to be at ear level in the listening position.

Mine are so tall because I had them in the bedroom when I made them and I sat on the bed and measured my head height.

I may need taller stands for the S30's then the 24 inch ones I have now. The tweeter would be below ear level on the 24 inchers.

30" stands should be ideal, just make sure to get a pair with a good size base, or the ability to fill them with sand. It helps decouple the speaker and makes it more steady, I would also recommend buying some "Blu-tac" on Amazon, it will not hurt the finish and help secure the speakers to the stand.

I got my new S30's about an hour ago. So far so good. Unlike the 2 dark oak pairs I had the black pair have perfect finishes. Now i just have to order taller stands!

Love to hear it, I hope they're as awesome to you as mine are for me!

I'm curious though why so many reviewers say that the treble is rolled off on the S30's. I'm not hearing that at all.
Because they care about graphs and not what is heard.

Then compare the functions and appearance...I offten do this, hahaha......

Well I may have spoken too soon. This is the third pair of the S30's I've ordered in the last 6 weeks form Crutchfield. The first 2 pairs dark oak had a defect in the finish. So I waited several weeks and decided to order another pair in black. The black finish on one of the speakers has a large blotch in the finish that doesn't match the rest of the finish. I can easily see it from several feet away. I'm not nitpicking here. I love these speakers but I can't keep ordering and returning them to Crutchfield.

Performance on a graph is performance on a graph, my opinion on the S30's is so high that I replaced my entire Infinity Primus set (363, 163, 153).

I like the clearer more defined sound of Cambridge Audio, and it wasn't until I did a listening comparison between the Monitor RX-1, and the Paradigm Studio 20's that I heard some of the S30's shortcomings. I think for output the P163 will play louder, I think for sound quality the S30 is very much more appealing to me..

Edit: I agree with ShadyJ about saying the Primus speakers are fatiguing to listen to after a while. I have not had that experienced that with S30's. Both speakers will be missing something unless a subwoofer is added.

Valtry - I'm curious where you had your speaker placement. I ask bc as the Cambridge speakers are rear ported and the Infinitys are front ported. I think the front ported design will work better for my application (if I move my bookshelves to my HT room they will be <6" to the wall) although I would prefer a clearer, brighter speaker.

Thanks for your post.

P163's were hanging on the wall higher than they should have been. I also had them in a bookshelf configuration in a general position in front of me. The S30's are on a stand about a foot away from the wall. I think the brightness and detail in the S30 will be better than the loudness of the P163, and the sound quality certainly overrides any qualms I had with placement.

Jerry, I'm really sorry to hear about your continued struggles with the S30's. There are a pair for sale on this forum for $150 that look pretty good. Also, just buy them from Amazon if you ship them back. Crutchfield is wasting your time with poor quality.

I'm about to pull the trigger on the S30s but I have some time as my turntable has yet to arrive... anyone know if they ever go on sale below $220?

Not unless you catch an open box buy. Check Crutchfield and AudioAdvisor to see. But not likely.

They're listed as unavailable right now, but it looks like Accessories4Less is getting new S30's in and selling them for $170:

I'm guessing this will be the closeout pricing to make way for the newly released SX series...

Also, if you don't want to wait for Accessories4Less to get them...

AVHiFi usually has a 10% off coupon...

I think I saw a pair for sale for $150 or so on AVS classifieds, they shows up sometimes on eBay for something less than $219.

Wow. Good catch. I see they have the CA S80 sub listed, too. Probably not bad for someone that wants a little 8" for a bedroom or computer desktop setup.

They have the Mordaunt Carnival 7, which looks to be essentially the same sub, for $120, but it's the calvados (very orange) finish..

Then there is the Carnival 9 (10" woofer) for $200 shipped...

Damn it... why did you have to tell me about the SX series?!

Now I have to throw them in the mix to research! Just kidding... but seriously, how much do those run?

The SX-50, which is the same size as the S30, runs $250. The bigger SX-60 is $350. Hi Def Lifestyle has both in stock right. I didn't see them anywhere else online yet.
I see them on Amazon through HiDef. Interesting, I might get these... I don't really have a need for them, but I sure want to compare them.

I'm curious how they compare too...

I did notice that the SX-50 is listed at 6.6lbs, whereas the S30 is listed at 8.3lbs... Makes me wonder if Cambridge went with thinner cabinets for the new series...
no dual binding posts either on the SX50

No dual posts might be a good way to cut costs for better components. I also prefer the look of the S30's rounded corners too.
Does anyone know of any real difference in sound quality between the new sx50 and the older s30?

Okay 3 pairs of speakers and all defective ,now I'm starting to think that you are a nitpicker.

is it nitpicking when you can see a defect in the speakers finish from 10 feet away?
