And that answers why you are willing to do this little temporary trade how?
I know you've always loved the Captivators (as showcased in the subjective comments of the two meets you hosted).
I've been thinking about this --- more the last few days. MrSmithers a local friend called me out on this little rabbit trail project in a private e-mail. He basically said:
A) you've been to more subwoofer meets than probably anyone else on AVSforum. In those meets you've directly compared all manner of subs - you liked captivator best at each meet T/F?true
B) you've heard pairs of sealed subs, four sealed subs, and eight sealed subs on many occasions. You still always liked your caps the best T/F?true
C) when ported of any vendor were compared to sealed of the same vendor or general class you always liked ported best. T/F?true
exampes: Rythmik F15 vs FV15HP, CHT 18.1 pair vs 18.1 VS pair, HSU ULS vs HSU VTF-15H, Epik Empire vs SVS PB12+, MFW-15 Turbos vs eD sealed 18's, Seaton Submersive vs. JTR Captivator, etc etc etc.
What the heck are you doing?
Really - I've not got much of a defense.
As noted in the first post - this is was a spur of the moment decision.
1) I found a smoking deal on some nice cabs. (I'm a deal hound - I often buy first think later)
2) I thought I'll purchase some drivers to load into the cabs - use my existing amps and compare the sealed vs. the ported configs back and forth over several months at a leisurely pace and determine if I really do like ported best.
3) Sell the subjective loser of the comparison for small loss. Hey we all like to experiment in this hobby or we wouldn't still be here incrementing our post count!
My interest in this is primarily because I read over and over and over again that I should like sealed best -- you guys are wearing me out. So far I've never been convinced of that in any way in any meet. I'm not looking to permanently trade any subs especially without tremendous audition time in my room. (short term trade would be cool) - but I am extremely interested in doing a real blind comparison between the (4) UXL, (4) Dayton, (4) SI, and (2) Caps. Exchange any of the aforementioned sealed subs for for LMS-5400 quads if we could come up with a set.
Honestly, I'm sort of expecting to continue to like the caps better - especially in my room if nothing else. The tactile response of the caps, and the air movement at the seats in my room due to the slot ports is just really addicting and exciting --- but I'm willing to give quad sealed a try - and being that four sealed 18's (SI or Dayton) and 2 caps could be worth a similar amount - I would have equal incentive to just keep the one I liked best as they both would be valued about the same for used sale. UXL's would cost about 1K more, LMS would cost about 3K more.
If I put together sealed LMS enclosures out of these four cabs, do you think I could get most or all of my money back out of these things? Could I get ~ $1200 back out of each cab for instance. $950 driver + $250 cab. Could I sell for 1k?Edited by Archaea - 9/17/13 at 10:57pm
