MONEY BETTER SPENT ON LOW END 7.1 RECIVER OR BUY USED?

Thread Starter
i have around 400 to spend on a 7.1 receiver. would i be better off going with a new low end reciver like a pioneer vsx-1122-k or go with a higher end used on like a onkyo TX SR805 or marantz sr7001. i am running a htpc setup and want to upgrade my 15 year old denon to a 7.1 setup. thanks for any replies

You'll get more bang for your buck buying used. I have a Marantz SR 7001 and it's a great receiver. It has everything you'll need for an awesome home theater. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles that the new receivers have, but it sounds great and will be able to switch all of your components.

Depends on what features you want as those older models may not have some of the features of the more current models. Review their respective mfr websites and determine which best meets your needs.

Stay away from Onkyo. The HDMI boards in them, have a terrible track record.

I would get a new one with a new warranty. Why take a risk when you don't have to.

Basically all receivers are the same. Some have some high end features like Audyssey xt32 or can do more than 7 channels, but for general use, they're all more or less the same. Buy for reliability and if there's must have feature. Don't buy for perceived quality differences.

They are all the same?

So, a receiver that was selling for $2499.99 four years ago, has the same quality as a $400 cheapo unit today? I seriously doubt that.
