While I tend to lean toward the direction of your post as well .. IMO, Lange, Bates, Bassett, Conroy played it so over the top and just seemed to throw themselves into the roles that it made up for much of the rest of the shtick .. the ensemble was worth the watch, IOW ..

I agree with the performances - they're first rate and the actors give it their all. And the camp
, but that's not really how they're playing it, is it? And therein lies the problem - there's a jarring disconnect, like Murphy & co. can't really figure out what they want this show to be. So it just ends being... a mess.
It's kind of what happened to 'Glee', and why I eventually had to bail on that show which was so enjoyable in its first couple of seasons. Murphy just seems to lose control of his creations after awhile and they kind of start meandering aimlessly off on their own.
