This KDL-65W850A is one really nice set. I have seen lots of adjustments on expensive sets but this one has twice as many. The first thing I found was the Vivid setting blew me away with great color, contrast and a picture that was a little to bright to be watching in normal room light. The vivid setting would be great for watcing dark scary Halloween movies. Did I forget to mention, the new set arrived at 6 pm yesterday evening.
First off I had to set the Scene Select to GENERAL from the default Auto setting. I put on the Avatar 3D disk and everything looked bluish and mixed with green. The colors were in the right place just the wrong colors. I made the adjustment and wow, man I felt I was watching a movie at the theater. I used one of the 4-pair of 3D glasses that came with the set.. I had to pull a tiny piece of clear material off the glasses to allow the battery to make contact. The tiny almost white power push switch is just above the nose piece. It don't tell you if it's on or off, no led indicator on the glasses at all. I did have to hold it down longer that I would liked too so to shut off the glasses. I have a large-digit blue readout digital clock near the floor which the digits look cut up till the glasses are turned off.. I started Avatar again on Vivid and this time choose 2D. I jumped to the part where they are flying on the giant birds. I got a few impressive pictures to show.
I took two groups of pictures, half with the brightness set to default Normal. The few of Avatar in 2D the TV was set to Vivid. I also didn't like the 3 brightness selections. Normal looked a little to low for me. The Custom setting was way to low, soft color and low contrast. I reset it's settings 'to match'
the Vivid settings. Bingo, now the Custom setting looks just right for normal viewing, good color, contrast and the brightness looks just right. I set the background setting to COOL on all, Vivid, Normal and Custom.
Down below I included a picture of the Scene Select page and the Picture Adjustments page. I also took a picture of a Lexus ad where the white text was of a full black background. I also took a picture of a full black screen but it simply came out black so I didn't post it. One picture of the Lexus ad that showed a little clouding half way down to the lower left of the screen, below the circles letter L. Touch of clouding behind the letter X in Lexus. No worry though, only the camera could pick it up. Using the Dish DVR I backed it up and ran that part of the ad again and again and visually the background was fully black. Again I was on Normal brightness. I will have to retest the blacks when set to Vivid or my newly adjusted Custom bright setting.
It could be the blacks may not be as black when on Vivid on this set but one thing for sure, I have seen some great TV pictures over the years and to me this Vivid setting tops em all.
I like the size of this TV. I had no idea it would take up much of the wall in my living room as it just fits a black TV stand with 4 places below the sides of the center to put equipment. This one has a open back to keep things cool.
The setup background you see in the right of the below picture is my pana blu-ray player. The sony menu pops up over it and you can very see though the black menu background. Here below is where I set the 'Scene Select' to General.
Sorry about the sharpness not looking good when in Normal for the pictures below. Vivid was set to 75% and Normal default was 50%. After the pictures I reset the Normal and Custom to 75%.
Double left click on any picture for a large view..
This is the default Vivid settings, the background setting one would have to page down once to see it and many, many other settings if you know what they are for.
This is the Lexus ad where you can see a little clouding behind the LX and below the L. Remember I ran this ad a few times and only the camera caught it. I only saw a full black background. The TV was set to Normal at the time.Edited by WhiteSands - 10/15/13 at 5:33am
