With the power of shadows at his beck and call, master thief Garrett returns to PS3 and PS4 in 2014 with a new bag of tricks. The well-loved stealth series has always empowered gamers with a broad array of in-game choices, whether it was using lethal or nonlethal tactics to drop nosy guards, or leveraging magic and technology to overcome adversity. The upcoming Thief is no exception.

In order to learn more about Thief’s stealth systems, storytelling, and PS4 benefits, we turned to producer Stephane Roy. He shared some incredible insight into Thief’s design process, and even shed new light on how DualShock 4 will empower PS4 thieves.

So let’s see what Garrett has gotten himself into this time…

While developing for both PS3 and PS4, do you have any predictions for what’s possible on PS4 that isn’t possible on PS3?
Stephane Roy: There are multiple components to this question; an AI component, an audio component, an art component. It’s very important for us to immerse players in our universe. We want to make sure players really feel like they’re Garrett, that they’re part of the environment. So on our side the immersion is key. And honestly, with the PS4, it’s just amazing to see how far we can push this immersion.

The DualShock 4 has several new features, including the light bar and touch pad. Have you put any preliminary thought into how the team will leverage these technologies?
Stephane Roy: We want to take advantage of as many new, next-gen features as possible, and that includes the new DualShock controller.

For the DualShock 4, we use the light bar to reflect the light gem in the in-game UI, which indicates if Garrett is in the shadows or not. It creates a nice feeling when you play in the dark to see it illuminate or darken as you move through the environment. Additionally, the touch pad allows for better menu navigation and makes for a more intuitive way to perform various actions, like navigating the map or selecting weapons.

What impressed us were not only the new features of the DualShock 4, but how the existing ones have been improved. The best example of that is the motion control, which is way more precise than before. You can use it to adjust your aiming with the bow and the level of accuracy we get with it is really impressive.

The last thing is the Share button. We think it’s a great addition, especially for a game like Thief. We give a lot of freedom to the player, and we work really hard to create a systemic AI that will let the player find creative ways to play. Sharing those moments will showcase how they solved various situations — and we’re pretty sure that players will find ways that impress even us.

That does look pretty neat, although I hope that isn't an indication as to what to expect from the PS4 version. I like the art style but a lot of the textures looked downright ugly. Hopefully it's from an early build.

I like what I've seen from all the videos that I've watched and have this preordered. I like a good stealth game.
This looks a lot like Dishonored but will probably snag it anyway, dat next gen. The trailer I watched looked amazing.

I'm a big fan of the first three and am looking forward to this title. Having just finished Assassin's Creed 4 and The Last of Us, Thief is starting to look make some justifications for me to get the PS4 version. Most of it seems to focus on the Dualshock 4 features (light orb, etc) but the resolution also is a big factor.

What didn't you like about Dishonored? I enjoyed it a lot. The storyline wasn't as strong as I would have liked, but the flexibility in completing missions was great.

I liked Dishonored actually. Just saying this looks like ground I've already covered. You've got a plague, oppressive regime, and assasiny thief type person.

I really enjoy Dishonored so far (still working on it actually.. it is hard to stick with PS3 games these days now that the PS4 has hit). This looks very cool from the videos so far. Looks like it is 1080p as well on the PS4 biggrin.gif

Not entirely sure on this one. Reviews have been mediocre it seems, but at the same time the reviewers total failed at accurately rating the launch titles so far IMO. Anyone picking it up?

Not at full price but maybe down the road. I still think the stealth looks fun despite the poor reviews.
Not enough wow factor. Reviews are not so good either. Plus its SP only and I'm buried in games. I'd much rather clear the slate for Infamous. Honestly I'd give first party Sony studios much more benefit of the doubt like the Order.
The reviews have me back on the fence, primarily because some indicate possibly glitchy AI. Similar to nex, I want to be 100% ready for Infamous. I tried to catch a few play thrus on twitch; might go back there before making a final decision.

Just a little interesting side note.

There was one (no name) site claiming better FPS performance on XB1 and claiming worse assets / frame rate on PS4 due to it being 1080P. GAF has outed the guy as a paid viral marketer who was routed out and banned from the site.

Going to pick it up tomorrow.

Reviews aren't all bad, but not stellar either....

From the gameplay videos I've watched, I'm completely uninterested in ever playing it. Just doesn't look fun to me, and graphically it's definitely not doing anything groundbreaking. Not that it should, but it shouldn't have the stated performance issues either. I recall Deus Ex Human Revolution being a mess on the consoles when it first came out, so it looks like this particular developer is bad at optimizing their engines.
Game engine is unreal tech 3, so gfx is going to be cross generation at best. The art style doesn't exactly lead to anything interesting anyways (dark, gray, Brown)

Be careful paying $60 for this game.
After all the reviews, this has all the makings of Hitman Absolution 2.

AAA Title, gets meh reviews, way too many copies, bad sales.

Which equals; quick price drop and high potential for PSN freebie at the end of the year.
Oh yes, this has Plus written all over it.
Yeah, after watching some videos and reviews, this doesn't interest me.

I think I'm gonna pass.
I'm interested. But with march around the corner and the mixed reviews, I'm guessing like above it'll be a summer plus option.
I'm going to give it whirl because gamefly sent it to me, I don't really have anything else to play and I can't go back to the PS3, something psychological about it.

Thank you, I'm not the only one. Plus dumps on me every month but if its not on PS4 I'm not interested. Vita is fine though oddly, maybe cuz its mobile.

Dark Souls 2 better get to the PS4 or its probably getting skipped biggrin.gif man I still haven't beaten the first one. BF3 stopped me when it launched years ago and I just haven't gotten back into it. I try here and there but I think I'm stuck where I need better equipment but forget wtf I was trying to do!

I just watched 2 new videos with some new areas/creatures shown. No way in hell am I skipping it. Looks awesome biggrin.gif

If you play the first pre-patch (you can delete the patch) you can level up super fast using a bug. There might be post patch ways to level up quickly as well.
