Theater Builders Report - CEDIA 2013. BIGmouthinDC gets dressed up and goes to town

I'm sure there will be reports of all the new projectors up in those forums, I intend to report on anything interesting for the guys building rooms.

last night there was plenty of free food and drink at the newcomers orientation and after the opening session.

What I learned is that NEST thermostats will soon be controllable from your theater seat. They also intend to make a pathway for the hobbiest to link up various control devices.

today it is 6 hours of Sound Reproduction class from Dr Toole.

So this is what you do instead of magically making my theater done??? :-)

Seriously, have a great time.

Hey, great you're going to be there - I'm going to have to make an effort to run into you and finally meet!

Wow, you are at CEDIA? I'll be looking forward to your report. And I've been thinking to get a NEST or an Insteon thermostat so I could control the temp from the HT too.

I want someone to check out the PHC (Pro Audio Technology) room. I'm looking at their speakers and I am sure the demo should be pretty amazing.

I'm also looking at Seatons, Procella and JTRs as well. Thanks!

It's great to hear that you're at CEDIA! That's a fun show.

Nest has released a full-blown API and also announced a formal partnership with Control4. I haven't looked into it yet but I anticipate a fairly easy integration with Crestron (that's what I program).

I think that there are a lot of useful scenarios with this device. I look forward to being able to use a very sophisticated occupancy sensor as a trigger in my house along with automation of other things like light harvesting based on temperature. Not that I'll likely DO any of these things but it's nice to know that it's there. :-)

I'm also interested in what Dr. Toole was talking about.

6 hours under the belt, 3 more tomorrow. He challenges many of the notions that we float around on this forum and I will try to summarize when it is all over.

In the meantime I have my priorities

I had to share my find with Snickers1, Mr Falcon Screens

Jeff - Looking forward to your take on his approach to acoustics, having read his book Sound Reproduction: The Acoustics and Psychoacoustics of Loudspeakers and Rooms among other acoustic books, and the various forum thread discussion that ensued.

Also, any chance there is a traveling version of this Harman International Reference Listening Room being there for you participants to experience his theories first hand, and if so your take on that experience would be great.
..

Take pictures of the conference!

As I read thru the course material for Dr. Toole's 3 seminars, http://expo.cedia.net/VirtualRegBrochure/vir-reg-brochure/index.html,
..
I see related product training is the Kinetics product line-up, http://www.kineticshometheater.com/acoustics.html, how was their product line-up firsthand?
Specifically their VersaTune Balanced Absorbers and Tuned Absorber/Diffuser (TAD) Panels, their version of a BAD product, as shown in their website photo.

I'll be real curious what you learned on sound practices. Also....it was great to meet you at the AVS party. I will pick your brain later about your thoughts on the various demos.

Yep, that's where I found him, too! Glad I at least got a chance to say hi - great to put an actual face and voice to the avatar!

Hope you got enough time on the show floor after all those classes. But the sessions are the best way to spend your first CEDIA...

Haha! I can't believe I didn't see you there. I knew I was tired from the long days but I must have been a zombie to not see you.

Good interview Big! Nice compliment to all the help you give on this forum. BTW, I don't think anyone thinks you spend 'too much' time on this forum.

I really wanted to go this year... but my company had other plans for me. Maybe in 2014 I'll take a break from our house build and go.
Jeff - now 2 weeks later, and you had time to reflect on your 3 classes.
What is your take on his approach to HT acoustics?

I traveled to Mexico this past week from DTW airport, and re-read his book during my 9 hours of plane + airport transfer time each way.
