No surround sound with 360

New to the forums, but impressed with the vast knowledge here! I'm having trouble with getting surround sound out of my xbox360 slim. I have a marantz nr1402 receiver, Panasonic plasma tv with coax cable connection (basic cable so I use the xbox for most entertainment)and the xbox. That's it.
TV connected to receiver by optical cable. I get surround sound when watching tv. Xbox is Hdmi to receiver, and Hdmi out from receiver to TV. I only get a stereo output from the xbox. I checked the xbox and it is set to Dolby 5.1 audio. When I check the receiver menu the status says the input is a stereo signal. I've verified with games and streaming from several services. I'm out of ideas. Any help would be hugely appreciated!

Hi hawkfan1008, possible a HDMI handshake issue. With everything on go Into the Xbox menu and selecting stereo then back to DD 5.1. Also on the receiver remote press surround or auto button.

Thanks JChin! It was as simple as that! Reset xbox to stereo and back, and cycled through surround modes on the receiver. Now in surround!

I've had my share of bad HDMI cables. Some that would only do stereo and some that just went bad over time. If you have further problems. Checkout some monoprice or bluerigger cables on amazon. Their cheap but have very high reviews.
