Dolby Digital Plus and Netflix on Various AVRs - Page 8

As you can't send DD+ over optical (only HDMI) then it isn't really related to any of the issues on this thread.

Also HDCP only runs over HDMI, so it's nothing to do with that either!

I'm not sure if the BDP S5100 will convert the DD+ from Netflix down to DD or not, can you try swapping to Stereo in Netflix to see if it continues, or is Stereo your only option?

It's actually coaxial, not optical, but the point is the same.

The receiver would output the audio in Dolby Digital, so if Netflix transmits the audio in DD+ (I'm not quite sure what that is), somehow most of it is getting to the receiver in a way that the receiver can process correctly.

I also tried the trick of selecting Stereo in the Netflix app, and as others have observed, that does avoid the problem.

So it seems to me that the problem that I am having is very similar to the problem discussed on this thread. This does make me question whether the problem is exclusively a receiver problem.
Get a modern receiver and you won't have that particular problem.

What brands currently handle Netflix DD+ without problems? I think Yamaha was mentioned as being OK. Anything else?

I was thinking of getting a Marantz NR 1604, but that doesn't seem to be a good choice at the moment.

My 2012 Pioneer works just fine.

D&M expects to release firmware updates to resolve this issue beginning with the 2013 and 2012 models first based on the following schedule, followed by the 2011 and 2010 models (TBD) with 2009 - 2007 networking models to follow after that (TBD).

Also note as has been previously mentioned, the work around is to set the Netflix source device to either PCM or STEREO.

Will Marantz product FW updates be on the Denon site?...or Marantz? I have an 8801 but I've never seen FW stuff on the Marantz site.
^^
Neither. The updates have not been listed on the websites for years. When it is available, the front panel display will indicate a firmware update is available.

As noted, the 1604 will be updated in less than a month not too mention there is likely to be little difference in quality between DD+ and simulated 5.1 using DD PLII for Netflix viewing.

JD, there was an update available...I'm assuming an old one. I'm updating now. Does an 8801 FW update erase all settings or is it recommended to reset and rerun Audyssey etc?
Normally it should not erase the settings. Note also that I list the 8801 firmware updates in post #1 of the Marantz 8801 owner's thread.

I"ve got the same issue with my Marantz NR1403.  Whenever streaming a dd+ title on netflix (via a Roku 3) I've got to keep it in stereo.  To me the dd+ is unusable due to the artifacts.

I did contact Marantz and they responded:  "There are no issues playing Netflix through the receiver from a device that supports Netflix streaming. However, we have verified that some titles using DD+ may contain audio artifacts. Our engineering team is currently working to address it."

I can't help but notice that the 1403 isn't on jdsmoothie's list.  I guess because it's not a networked receiver?  I hope I can send the unit in or something - I'm finding the situation very frustrating.

^^
Correct. The listed units are only the networking models. I have no information on when non-networking models would be updated which would require sending the unit in to an authorized repair facility. Although again, the work around is simply to set the Netflix to STEREO and let the 1403 use DD PLII to simulate 5.1 audio.

I tried a Yamaha RX-V375 receiver with a Sony BDP-S5100. Netflix now streams flawlessly.

An added benefit is that the sound is noticeably better than my 15 year old Denon receiver.

I have this distortion on DD+ with my Denon AVP-A1HDCI. Good think I found this thread, it was driving me a bit crazy! Looking forward to an update, thanks jdsmoothie.

Mine is still updating, I kicked it off a few minutes ago. The ETA on my 4520 is around 1 hour. It's currently sitting at 40-some-odd minutes left, updating DSP1.

Download only took a second. The firmware update took longer. EEPROM isn't known for speed. Checking a few videos now.
So far so good on my 4520. Fired up nightmare and heard no artifacts. Next up is listening to other content and verifying other audio hasn't degraded. Thus far I am impressed with Denon in addressing this issue.

Hmmm..
Can't really comment about the firmware upgrade process/time except glad to see Denon finally responded to the multiple complaints about DD + & Net Flix..
In the future I hope Denon keeps their Dolby algorithms up to date so one doesn't have to go through this lengthy process....

Just my $0.05..... 👍😉
I think the issue is with Netflix. I have a pioneer 1018 and stream Netflix through the chromecast. Some shows including that 70's show sound great in DD+. Some movies sound great too. Then there are others that sound terrible with the S sounds and talking but changing it to stereo fixed it. There's no way the problem can be with multiple AVRs when some shows and movies sound fine and others don't. Doesn't make sense.

As has already been noted in this thread, this "Netflix" issue is present across multiple mfr's and not exclusive to Denon as a result of changes made to the Dolby encoder by Netflix.

E300 update just went online... updating now...

UPDATE... problem appears to be corrected! Didn't even have to reprogram the unit. All setting remained intact. Good job Denon.

... but man Netflix, stop cheaping out on the bit rate.

Thanks JD I'll be updating my X1000 as soon as the new firmware is ready.

Aaar...glad it's being fixed. Just want an update to my 1912 now. Other fixes would be a bonus, not that I have any issues but that one!
