And by the way, I know nothing about MythTV or Sage or any of the PC based alternative to Replay TV.
The problem is human nature. If you use/choose something, then it's the best damn thing on the planet. No fact will dissuade you. In the old Replay/Tivo days, the Tivo people would cry that Tivo was "better". When you compare the systems, the truth is they were similar in many ways, but the Replay's pluses were DRAMATICALLY better than Tivo. Streaming, conflict resolution, file format, DRM, etc, etc. Then the discussion would deteriorate into Tivo people saying "yeah, but that needs DVArchive", like that is supposed to mean something. Finally the Tivo people would say Tivo was "good enough" like you should repent for using Replay features and just be satisfied with their kludgy interface and feature set (which persists to this day. The other thing people say is something is your "opinion". Part of that is a factor but the definition of a PVR and what is supposed to accomplish is not opinion as is whether or not some feature is "better".
A Yugo and a Mercedes S Class are both cars, and will each get you to work. But there is nothing under the definition "automobile" which is "better" with the Yugo. It can't stop, handle or go as well, etc, etc. Now as you say, you have not used XXX or YYY, but trust me, I have. And I can tell you THERE IS NOT A SINGLE BLESSED THING in WMCE that SageTV does not do MUCH better. Which is why Google bought it, presumably as the basis for GoogleTV. And while I have not used Myth to any great degree, trust me I have made one or 2 for friends using "cookbook" settings (use this motherboard, video card, change these settings) and they run from the get go.
Everything today is HD, and the mainstream guy has basically 2 choices WMCE or TivoHD. A Tivo system is dramatically expensive. MCE is a kludge to set up with cable card (especially if it does not like your PC's DRM settings and have to fix it. Fortunately, I found a tool to remove DRM signatures and redo them). If you go the Tivo route besides the cost, you sit their and say "how dumb and slow is this thing" to do the most common tasks. That's until you use MCE where after you say how dumb and slow it is to do something, you easily find another task dumber and slower. Again, none of this might matter if you record 1-2 things a night. I usually record 15-20 things a day. You can see that if I had to go through 3-5 screens each time I needed to find what is going to record, what new releases are coming, conflicts, what eps where recorded in the past, what will be shown in the future, change record parameters, on and on, I couldn't do anything else.
MCE controls most of you display options, so you have very little you can add to it to fix or enhance it. Yeah, you can buy the donator version of comskip and add a third party program and plug in and have it skip commercials, but you can't see the markings except in rare times and that is with a purchased add on. You do not know if you are missing programming. After tweaking comskip options, it is extremely rare for it to error (mostly for single shows like "American Horror" with all the black screens) in Sage and you can instantly see the marks. You bring up the marks and know from the pattern that their dead on.
