Trying to make my 2009 Panasonic S1 black again

I know this is one of the infamous rising black models, but I was hoping somebody had a setting I could try.

I have an AMD videocard in an HTPC feeding my plasma. It is set at mostly default settings.

On the tv I've tried a number of settings. When I'm sitting in a dark room the black letterbox bars are a very noticeable gray. Movies like The Dark Knight with lots of shadow detail get muddied up.

Anything I can try turning up/down in the service menu or other recommended settings?
