Need an AV Receiver ~$200

My Denon AV receiver bit the dust. It no longer turns on. I may open it up to see if it's a power supply malfunction, but my knowledge is limited. Unless I could find a blown cap or similar, visually, I won't be able to fix it. The current system is this: Denon DHT487-DV

It's a HTIB system. I no longer use the DVD player as I use my HTPC with a Blu-Ray player, but the speakers and sub are still alive.

Any suggestions on a decent replacement for the receiver? I was looking at refurb Onkyos here:
HT-R391 - $179.99
HT-RC440 - $219.99
TX-NR414 - $199.99
TX-SR313 - $199.99
HT-S3500 (system with speakers) - $279.99

I also looked on newegg at these:
Harman/Kardon AVR 1650 - $281.99 (I've seen this on sale for much less before)
Harman/Kardon AVR 1565 - $199.99
Pioneer VSX-822-K - $199.99

I truly don't know the main difference between these, so I figured I'd ask some of the pros here. tongue.gif

Look like Onkyo has a 20% off deal today!! Promo Code: COLU

Thanks in advance!!

Just signed up for Club Onkyo and the HT-R391 comes up as only $129.99. Wow. I get 10 points plus the 20% off and I'm looking at almost $100. That's cheap, but I wonder what the catch is.

Don't get the HTR-391 as it doesn't not have a sub level output for a powered sub. It uses speaker level outputs and you won't be able to connect your Denon sub. that's the catch.

Get the Pioneer VSX-822, the HK 1565 or one of the higher up Onkyos if you're willing to take a chance on their reliability.

The Pioneer has networking, Airplay, Pandora and internet radio streaming which is a plus.

I would actually recommend the Denon 1613 as is has better room correction than the receivers you listed. And it has networking too.

Thanks for the response!
Good eye on the sub output. Damn... It was $93 shipped too after all of the discounts.
Do you recommend anything from the onkyo refurb section? I am willing to take the risk, especially that it's a 1-yr warranty. I'm ok with having no receiver for a week or two if I have to, as the TV's internal speakers can hold me down temporarily.

problem is repair tends to be longer than 1 or 2 weeks.

Where are you located?

You'll probably say it's dumb, but worth mentioning. What if I bought a high-level output to low-level converter as such:
http://www.sonicelectronix.com/cat_i331_line-out-converters.html

How about the ONKYO HT-RC440... it's only $150 w/free shipping at that site you linked earlier, cheaper than at Onkyo themselves ($219 - 20% = $175).
http://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/item/ONKHTRC440/ONKYO-HT-RC440-5.1-Channel-3D-Ready-Network-AV-Receiver/1.html

I do have an iPhone, so Airplay would be nice.

The DENON AVR-1613 from their site is roughly $212.32 after shipping, so it's a $62.32 more. At this point I'm deciding between those two and leaning towards the Onkyo HT-RC440 because of price.

Onkyo doesn't have Airplay. You need Denon, Marantz, Pioneer or Yamaha for that.

Get whichever receiver meets all your needs. It seems you're putting a premium on price over features.

Well, Airplay may be a very nice feature after all. Thanks for your help so far, bud!!

I'm torn between the DENON AVR-1613 and the Pioneer VSX-822-K... my only delay so far has been that I'm waiting for a front page deal, but getting impatient...

Both models are built @ the same Sherwood factory.
For the money either one is a good deal, my personal preference is the Pioneer..

Just my $0.05.... 👍😉

Oh, it's DEFINITELY a great deal, even at $199, but I did see a refurb sell for $155 @ NewEgg just 2 weeks ago and I'm beating myself up for missing out. My current Denon died a few weeks ago, I unplugged and plugged it back in and it worked... I wish it died then b/c I would have hopped onto the front page deal I missed out on.

If I buy it, I'm going with newegg most likely (no tax and their warehouse is one state away)... I live in NY and they often ship from NJ to me.
Now, the Denon you mentioned is what's had me caught up on which receiver I want... since I took your word for it having better room correction.

Okay, so I got the Pioneer VSX-822-K for $180 brand new from NewEgg. There is a 10% off promo code for the newegg mobile app: MBLEMC10

For $5 I upgraded to ground shipping which estimates 1-day delivery (since I'm in NY and they have a warehouse in NJ). I'm HOPING they ship today so that I get it tomorrow and can set it up tomorrow night since I'm busy the rest of the weekend. THANKS FOR THE HELP, GUYS!!! smile.gif

Damn, the HK 1650 is currently $199 at newegg:

Oh well. I'm liking the Pioneer, so I shouldn't be upset per se. smile.gif

The HK doesn't have networking or airplay so you might have been disappointed in the HK 1650.

I didn't catch the Airplay actually. Dude, it's fun using it. smile.gif

I actually had my baby in his activity center, similar to one of these:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Evenflo-ExerSaucer-Activity-Center-Mega-Splash/14978058

I popped in with airplay and when I hit play on my iPhone it scared the crap out of him... thankfully, he didn't cry! smile.gif He's only 6 months old, and did rock out to some heavy metal.

What receiver/speakers do you have set up?

Energy RC towers, bookshelf, center speaker and surrounds and Also Jamo towers, center and surrounds.
