I apologize if this is a noob question but I've been scratching my head for a week now trying to get this thing to work like I figured it would out of the box.
I currently use the Fiio E09/E17 combination connected via USB to my desktop PC. It is connected to a pair of M-Audio BX5 Speakers via a 1/4" to RCA cable to the Pre-out on the DAC. Typically this works beautifully, however I come into the problem when using it with a pair of Audio Technica ATH-M50s. When I plug the headphones into the front port on the DAC, I get audio out both the speakers and the headphones. My assumption was that speaker audio would be muted when headphones are plugged into the front port.
The only thing I can think of doing is turning off the speakers when I only want headphone audio; putting the speakers on a dedicated power strip so i can easily turn them on/off from the strip instead of with the back panel.
Is there a way to do this without going the power strip route?
I would like to maintain functionality of the volume nob on the DAC for speaker and headphone control.
I would like to be able to plug in the headphones when needed, and unplug them to use the speakers.
Seems simple enough but is there anything I'm doing wrong or misunderstanding about my setup that I can correct to get this functionality?
