I went to my local Best Buy tonight to see if I could see a demo of the 5020 or 5030 in 3D, but there was no 5030 (expected) and the demo 5020 went out the door yesterday for $2399. However, to my great surprise they did have a 4030 up and running ($2499). I had actually gone to this same location two days ago to view the 5020, but they couldn't find the 3D glasses. I was unexpectedly in the neighborhood with some time to kill tonight, so thought I'd stop by and see if they had found or replaced the 3D glasses. They didn't. Turns out they didn't have any for the 4030 either.
My total viewing experience of a 5020 and 4030 are these two 30 minute visits to Best Buy, but to both my wife and I the 4030 clearly seemed better (we saw parts of Life of Pi on 5020, and Iron Man 3 on the 4030). Okay, okay, I know that this is far from a critical review and I don't even know what setting the 4030 was on (couldn't find the remote and my BB salesman didn't really want to try and play with the projector, something about 'factory setting', so I didn't push it), but it has certainly intrigued me. So, like so many others I anxiously await reviews of the 4030.
Where though does the 4030 fit on the Epson value line up? For another $100 you get the 5030. The contrast and the brightness are "better" on the 5030, but other than the lamp, color, and extra year of warranty, does the 4030 have anything to sing about over the 5030?
