Bedroom solution

Thread Starter
Hi,

despite what the headline may suggest... I am merely looking for a solution to stream (or just play) movies from my living room HTPC (media portal setup with about 10TB of stuff in 1080p mkv's and other file types) to the bedroom.
I want good quality with minimal lag. easy interface (i.e. no keyboard or mouse). I have a roku box and I don't like it. I have a 1st gen apple tv somewhere but I doubt that will do hd well even if I jailbreak it. I am thinking of buying a new apple TV and jailbreak it but I've never done it before. is that a viable solution ? what would you recommend I'd do ?

thanks !

Intel NUC running Openelec would be a good option

I was going to suggest the Roku actually. They make great, low power discreet bedroom solutions (I've got two for the kids). When used with Plex, they are great media clients. What 'don't you like' about them?

I wonder if the OP is using Plex or if his Roku is older and doesn't support it? You will get trans-coded video with Plex on the Roku I think, BTW.

The 3 handles all of my MKV rips with DTS even sone DTSHD audio is transcoded nicely. The 3 is a much more powerful low power machine. The OP could also look in the mede8er type boxes. They also work phenomenal.

There are several threads offering PC builds in the $400 range for this issue.  Personally I bought the Foxconn Nettop which does do the MediaPortal just fine albeit sluggish while navigating.  I opted to build an AMD A5-3500 based PC and have really enjoyed the performance!  It runs Win 7 HP so I can do WMC for my Prime as well as MP for my videos & OTA recordings.  Using a Harmony remote and a WMC remote receiver the remote is my primary interface with a Logitech K400 as necessary.
