Mickey's Christmas Carol - BD vs HDTV

3 years or so ago the Disney Xmas special was aired on HDTV. It had some artifacts in it to be sure but I decided to record to see what it looks like compared to a future Blu-ray release. I assumed the BD would be cleaned but I had not imagined it would have such strong processing as been reported.

I am a bit late with this because I had to search for the disc I saved the video on plus I had some other important life things to deal with.
Anyway here are some 1080p caps (hope this works), the HDTV framing is definitely different, the colors are more subtle and the line art thinner (which I am pretty is more accurate):
First are the links to the BD image captures done by somebody else and comments on what is different in the BD images.

The food line art is gets blurred out in some parts of the image:

The Christmas tree has a lot of fine detail lost:

The shaggy xmas tree takes a whooping here, a lot of fine detail lost and the doll loses the stitches in it's mouth:

Death gets his pupils rubbed out and some of the ground line art gets merged into blocks:

I am sure the artist who worked so hard on the chair would be happy the subtle shading has been turned into mush, also goofy's transparency seems not to be as well presented as in the HDTV version:

This new transfer on the Blu-ray is getting slammed at multiple forums. Apparently Disney auto-scrubbed the cel animation with very little regard. It is not that much of a surprise, Disney has not been putting in much of an effort on their less-popular releases.

In their infinite wisdom, the new transfer has also been heavily cropped.mad.gif

Studios think that those with keen eyes for artifacts and gener overall picture quality will not see what they have done? I doubt it, just didn't care about this disk. Specially when you compare to Lion King 2D.

Disney did remaster Gangs of New York but I am skeptical they will do the same with the latest and seemly worse releases. Still maybe the mickey mouse operation will prove me wrong, there is strong evidence they have better looking masters.

“Mickey’s Christmas Carol” was always rough-looking (witness the top photo), but it's been digitally restored and now looks wonderful on Blu-ray.
