Hi all - it's time again for that special discussion. biggrin.gif The ball started rolling about a week or so back via PM and has the idea started to formalize so here we go. I'd like to make this a smaller event in comparison to the prior GTGs at my place this time around in interest of staying focused on the listening and setup.

Date:
Saturday, January 18th. Start time 10:00AM and will likely run far into the late afternoon/evening. Barring any blizzards hitting the region we should be good as long as those traveling in are OK. cool.gif

Location:
My place in Thornton, PA again. Address details to be sent to confirmed attendees prior to the event.

Topic:
Home theater heavyweight loudspeaker shootout. The focus will be on extended listening and evaluation of 3-5 pairs of popular high end home theater oriented loudspeakers. In essence it will be the current/popular offerings of the 'Creme de la Creme' being demoed. tongue.gif I would like to do blind testing behind my AT screen if at all possible. For this to happen logistically I will need 2 volunteers to help pull the screen down and swap, etc. I'd like to distribute 'notecards/sheets' like Archaea has done successfully in the past and collect thoughts/opinions before releasing the speaker names. smile.gif It should make for a very fun day! As usual we'll be sharing great food and beverages throughout the day. The main goal is to give listeners the chance to listen to these setups on the same room on the same day with some method of standardization applied so that each can get an unbiased feel of what they like. I'm hoping this event will be as helpful as the past events have been for the AVS community. wink.gif

Accommodations:
A popular local choice from the past events:
Hampton Inn Concordville
http://hamptoninn3.hilton.com/en/hotels/pennsylvania/hampton-inn-and-suites-chadds-ford-CFORDHX/index.html

My room:
Gorillas basement hangout (See link my in signature for details/pictures)
13x24 listening area with bar behind. Full front wall treatments, front bass traps, 2 row seating, side treatments, ceiling bass trapping (full room).

Gear:
Denon 4311 pre-pro, Oppo-93, Roku 3 HD, PS3, Sherbourn 7-350 mains amplifier (or Crown XLS2000), 130" 16:9 Seymour XD screen, 8x18" Dayton subwoofers, 2 x Peavey IPR7500 amplifiers for LFE

Setup details:
Blind
Measurements? Omnimic and/or Speclab.
Crossover points? TBD
Sub level? TBD
Standardized volume level? TBD
Listening duration for each pair? 1.5 to 2 hours for setup and listening.

Content:

Draft lists of content here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqxAXcqgy_iTdG9STFoyRHlLVkxaSzVIU1RRWFhSRkE&usp=sharing#gid=0

Attendees: Attendance will be limited to FIFTEEN individuals to keep a focused session. I will update the list immediately if there are any changes prior to the event. Currently at capacity. I set this limit not to be cruel but to provide the attendees ample opportunity to comfortably cycle through sweet spots. If any spots open up, I will post here immediately. Please do not PM me, I have gotten over a dozen PMs already asking to be the "exception."

Confirmed parties:

Current attendee count = 15

1) Gorilla83, Andrew

4) Sibuna, Adam

Id love to add some Cats back in again this time if Mark is willing to accomodate smile.gif If not, all good. Those and some plats I feel would really round it out nicely. That provides us PLENTY of time to listen to each set at that point.

I volunteer for the moving crew again. I can bring some select brews that people seemed to enjoy last time as well.

Good point - Not sure if Mike (former Focus SEs) is up for it, but there are a pair of Cat 12s literally 3 miles away from me. biggrin.gif

And +100000 to the Asheville brews!

I second the Cat 12's.

As for a suggestion what are the thoughts on a 50/50 of HT and music? I know you mentioned a duration of an hour and a half, what about 45 minutes of music and 45 minutes of movies??

That sounds pretty good to me. Let's see how the clip selection plays out.

i was impressed with them when i heard them as well. liked them a lot when compared to the similar offerings on the day

I really liked the blind speaker GTG we had at my house in the summer of 2012.

We had 4 speakers and each person took their turn sitting in the sweet spot - and they sat there for the exact same songs for every set of speakers. Also, the person that sat in the sweet spot was allowed to adjust the volume for how they liked it during their turn.

It goes without saying... but I'll say it anyway, man I wish I could be there. smile.gif

-edit-

Wow, no idea a plane ticket would be so cheap. Thanks Brandon for peer pressuring me into looking at prices. biggrin.gif

I'd like to attend if still a spot available. If a Lab Gruppen 10000Q would be considered helpful, I'd be glad to bring mine along.

BTW unless anyone minds the slightly less room I'd like to extend the invite to Mark and Jeff as their products are being represented. They don't get in the way of any listening and are always on standby to answer questions. We always have a good time with those guys and they are fun to chat with and discuss new and upcoming ideas.

Hey RMK,

Think the OS is under the weight limit for carry-on? You could just check the other one smile.gif

I fly very often and can answer this.....

there is no weight limit when you show up sufficiently early and with sufficiently deep pockets....

This is a bit of a who's who list of avsforum attendees... tongue.gif

I was just checking in to say I was coming, and was reading from the bottom up and thought DANG this thing is already filled up - but I see Gorilla83 took it from our PMs that carp and I intend to fly out!

You North Easterners are a fun group to get together with!

RMK! I didn't get to meet up with you when I visited San Fran last year - but looks like I'll get to meet you on the east coast! ha! biggrin.gif

If you need that 5th pair of speakers to listen to, I can probably send in something interesting. biggrin.gif

I'm OK with Mark and Jeff coming BUT they don't get to hold the remote. tongue.gif

Looking forward to meeting y'all.

^^^Ditto, it's like some sort of extended family reunion of the Noesis clan smile.gif
post #30 of 1057
Subscribed.. this is gonna be so exciting for those of us who are gonna live vicariously thru you guys...

I would really like to hear ChopShop's Mega Speakers...

And the Triad Plats...

Also, again, suggestion.. I hope there will be no limit to volume (or volume matching).. to me that kinda defeats the strength of some of the speakers.. if you're gonna tie their hands and legs.. it has to be full dynamics, pass the remote around, and give each listener a chance to set volume to their own comfortable listening volume...

And, if the proprietors are around, they should be allowed to set the crossover to the subs based on their own speaker designs... again, not all speakers should be crossed over at the exact same frequency, since each may have upper or lower frequency responses.... we want to know how each speaker perform at 'their' best....
