If there is time at the end of the meet and you are not opposed, I'd bring the lepai t-amp and we can a/b the two back and forth at regular listening volume, and slowly increase the volume to see where a distinction is heard between the two. There is not much better than what you have, so the comparison would be interesting.
Of course! I would be upset if we didn't. That's why it's so important we have the proper content too. If we gain anything from Tom Danley's comments it is that the differences up to, or near clipping, are small and may not be where they are expected. Knowing what to listen for, and having content that can reveal the differences, is key.
Have you taken the Harman "listener training courses"?
They were pretty eye opening to me and showed that things that were not apparent become so when you know what to listen for. They were able to isolate specific characteristics to listen to and train the ear through repetition and progressively more subtle forms of distortion/peaks/dips/coloration/hum, etc., etc.
My point being that if we want to know if differences exist we have to know what to listen for. And please, do not mistake this for any criticism of the amp tests I know you've done already. It's not meant that way. I'm only trying to hone the content and the listener expectation/focus so if a difference does exist, we don't miss it.
I am willing to accept no difference if one truly doesn't exist. I just know that there is evidence out there, mostly anecdotal - Danley's included - that if there is a difference it will not smack you in the face in a AB comparison and exists only in the very difficult to assess dynamics domain.
Also, this is a speaker shoot - out and any amp stuff needs to be under the "if we have time after" category.
But for the speaker shootout, considering there will be mostly high power handling speakers, I do think the LG can serve as a reference amp , eliminating any niggling amp questions. (At least for those of us that believe
