Help Me With My Audio System!

Hey guys, I'm Dav!

So here's the deal: I just got house after a long time of being in an apartment. Last month I purchased an Epson 6030 projector with a 135" screen, it is amazing. I have no real audio system at all. I have the projector set up in a long narrow room with an 8 foot roof, the projector screen is on one end with the couch in the middle.

When I was younger I built a few SPL systems for car audio competitions, and I thought I knew alot about audio, but after a week or so of lurking the internets I'm lost when it comes to a home theater setup.

I don't plan on modifying the space for soundproofing or anything, but I want decent sound to go with this projector. So not professional, but good enough to not be unprofessional... if that makes sense? I would say somewhere in the neighborhood of 3-5k, maybe less or more if there is some sort of price/performance plateau like there is with projectors.

Anyways, what do you guys recommend for an audio system in a room like that? It will be used for movies and gaming, not music.

Well, be prepared for a LOT of recommendations. That's a good budget for a good/great system. Good luck in sorting it out. biggrin.gif

We're assuming a 5.1 system here? (Five channels plus subs.)
What's the size of the room?

Personally, I'd go with a Salk speaker system (www.salksound.com), two Rythmik subs and a big Denon receiver.

OK. Let's break your budget a little wink.gif

Since you used to be into SPL systems, check these JTR home theater speakers out. Have a reputation for good sound quality, but high sensitivity so you can get some serious volume out of them. Three of those and then two of the Slanted 8HTs to wall mount for surrounds. smile.gif

Oh my gosh, those Salk's look nice. And I definitely want 5.1 minimum.
I'm pretty sold on those Denon receivers already.. or maybe a Yamaha, just because video processing shouldn't be an issue with the Epson.

The room is roughly 15X30ft, seating offset a bit from center, towards the back.
7.1 might be on order with a room that size?

Money is an object, but not.. no more than 5-6 grand... I want to buy an R34 next year, they can finally be imported to Canada starting January.

You are in Canada? That will likely change recommendations. Your pricing is a good bit different than the US. Most of the time you get hit with at or near full MSRP for lots of home audio.

You might check out SVS Sound. Well known for their subwoofers, and they have very good speakers. They have a Canadian distributor, so their prices are very good.

The Salks are so much nicer looking in person.

I've noticed several Canadians would have things shipped to a border, cross themselves and drive back. Also Jim Salk is experienced with shipping to Canada.

Crutchfield Canada

Look at PSB - however, still look at SVS subwoofers

The spec's on those JTR's are Godly, but the aesthetics are something that I would reserve for my garage... like damn, why does that have to happen?
Those are bit too intense for a regular house I guess anyways.. I have painting's I'd like to keep on the walls ;P

LOL
The JTRs are meant for a dedicated HT room, and many people might put them behind the screen. smile.gif
