hello all,

will the ps4 play mkv files & decode dts hd ma?

It doesn't even support playing mp3s locally let alone MKVs with DTS-MA.

Since it doesn't support DLNA or you can't hook up a external hard drive I would move on and get a cheap local streamer.

I've been waiting to get the new ps4 to replace my old ps3 fat. Except, I just found out the other day that the new ps4 will no longer stream anything at all from my network pc.

That sucks Sony....

Does it really? The ps3 sucked for local file playback supporting such a limited set of codecs and file formats .... I would just get a dedicated local streamer

Even if the PS4 supported MKV with DTS-HD MA you would run into problems because of Cinavia.

Sony will probably update the PS4 with some DLNA capability in the future but I would guess it's a low priority.

Doesn't matter though because of Cinavia DRM the PS4 and Xbox One are both useless as BD streamers.

I used Aovsoft Media Converter to convert MKV and AVI files to PS4 supported format, it works perfectly. The tool is free to try, so you can take a try, PS4 supports MP4 format, you can convert files to PS4 best format, my friends also use this method and it works.

Cinavia ???? Really ??? I have to say, that at worse case, 1 out of maybe 10 movies seem to give me trouble on my ps3. And let me just say. If you don't know the work around for that by now. Wow....

It just blows me away, that I keep hearing. "oh, that wont work. Cinavia. "

Now I am curious about MP4 play back on the ps4.....Didn't know that. How, thumb drive????

I'm just worried about 3d blu ray play back. Cause with out that, then i'll have to get a new blu ray player. Which i'm not totally against. I'd love to get the new OPPO 103d....Just give me a good excuse...

Even 1 is unacceptable to others just because your okay with it doesn't mean others are, same goes for the hoops you have to jump through to try and fool Cinavia.

hdcon22 is most likely an automated spammer, the PS4 does not play MP4 videos according to well everyone...

I would not want 1 out of 10 of my movie watching experiences to be spoiled...I am becoming engrossed in the movie and suddenly it stops 10 minutes in. Most people are the same.

Cinavia is still new. What happens if all of the studios start using it? How would you feel about 8 in 10.

You're using a PS3. There is a work-around for the PS3, but not for other devices, and we're talking about the PS4 here. The concern is based on the possibly being no work-around. The PS3 work-around is due to the hardware pre-dating Cinavia.

@Harry
Just to add -- the "workaround" for the PS3 is a DVD Fab concoction that creates a disk that can only be played on a PS3 with firmware that pre-dates 4.1. Sony corrected the hole with v4.1 and eliminated that "workaround". If the PS3 has v4.1 or later there is no workaround for Cinavia -- the PS3 is probably the most Cinavia compliant player out there; it enforces Cinavia for disks or streaming. Nearly every BD title Sony has released over the past several years has had Cinavia implanted -- they are the Cinavia poster child. Here is the list. To think the PS4 won't be Cinavia compliant or that there will be a work-around is pure fantasy.
