Helping my dad (60+) put together a new HT speaker system this weekend.

I use Paradigm and have forever. Love those speakers - have a thread going on in there.

Any other speaker manufacturers I should look at? Budget is $1500, without receiver.

I have several dealers nearby (Monitor Audio, Paradigm, B&W, etc).

Thanks for any input.

Room size?

Any physical considerations such as size or color?

Any listening preferences?

Thanks.

Have you considered ordering online - or, do you really plan to set this up this weekend?

Depending on some serious deals - may be hard pressed for $1500 from a dealer

Look at Monitor Audio and Focal for some closeout prices

Maybe just start with a pair of towers for now. With a single listening position they should create a good phantom center and you can get by without a sub for the time being. Add in a center and sub, and surrounds down the road, it will be a good way to end up with a nicer system.

Dallas, Texas area.

Really want to give them something decent, but nothing crazy expensive. They have been using a cheap Pioneer-in-a-box set from 1995. So, really, anything will be an upgrade.

Fry's has a number of stores in your area:

http://www.frys.com/ac/storeinfo/storelocator

They have some Klipsch speakers on sale for $100, ending today 11/07.

Also, ending today they have the highly thought of Pioneer Speakers and a Yamaha Receiver on sale.

In terms of a sub, there is a lot of support on this forum for ID subs, so perhaps buying them the speakers and receiver and ordering a sub would work well.

Also, you could check out Best Buy for closeouts or sales:

Is it best to get all new speakers, rather than repurpose my old Paradigm Monitor 5 V3 and CC-370?

They are about 9 years old, and have been treated very well.

Are you thinking about buying new for you - and giving you father the Paradigm?

If changing speakers and starting over 3.1 is a good beginning, or 2.1, or 3.0 if you
have a decent sub.

The V3 Monitors are old school and a little behind the times.
