This may be a bit OT, but the success of a franchise seems to be tied, more and more, to it's over seas earnings. It's great when a domestic underperformer, like Prometheus or Pacific Rim, do well enough over seas to warrant a sequel. (please don't hurt me
)But it kind of sucks when a very good domestic performing release, like Monsters Vs. Aliens, is not picked up for a sequel due to it poor world wide take. (200 mil US, 183 for the rest)
What also kind of sucks, and I don't want to sound like an ugly American, is the sense that movies are being dumbed down to appeal to a less sophisticated foreign audience, in relation to movies.
