Hi Audio/Video experts!
I am in that familiar position of having replaced the receiver that came with my dedicated speaker + subwoofer system (Sony DAV-HDX265) only to learn that the new receiver (Sony STR-DH540) doesn't offer a powered subwoofer signal. I've already ordered a Yamaha SW215 to power the bass but it seems like a shame to separate the subwoofer from its family (the other speakers) and given that the new receiver is 5.2 (i.e. it has two subwoofer outputs), I'm still interested in powering it.
I've seen many parts-express themed threads suggesting installing a subwoofer panel amp onto the passive sub but I'm neither interested in spending that much money or time on this a project.
Will this $15 amplifier from Pyle (PHA15) do the trick? Reviews say it can take the signal from an MP3 play and amplify enough to play loudly through 15" speakers. Would it be feasible to
(1) convert the subwoofer output signal to the required 3.5mm female jack
(2) connect the passive subwoofer to the PHA15 amplifier
(3) hear decent bass through the passive subwoofer?
Before I order the PHA15, I'd like to get any feedback or advice you can offer.
