Ideal room dimensions for best acoustics?

I'm building a room within a room for a home theater - so I have some leeway in terms of how I create the dimensions of the inner - Home Theater.

The outer room is 22' by 12' (so that's the max).

What is the ideal dimensions (as far as room acoustics is concerned)?
Also - should I make the walls somewhat at an angle?

thx

There are preferred dimensions, but larger is better too. My Graphical Mode Calculator software and article show that 22' by 12' (by 8') is not terrible. A length of 17 feet gives a better mode distribution, but if this was my room I'd leave it the full length. No matter what size you choose, you'll need bass traps to even the response anyway.

I wouldn't do that as it will just make the room even smaller. Angles are useful in some situations, but not so much for a home listening room or theater.

+1. Ethan's site has a wealth of info worth reading (check the Acoustics Info tab).

You could look up golden ratios and prime dimensions if you wish. Mostly the idea is not to have any dimensions be exact multiples of any other to avoid doubling of room modes.

All IMO since based upon recent threads there are no facts. smile.gif - Don

thanks! great info

I have just glanced at it to get the gist but plan to review more thoroughly

One other Q- does the room need to be rectangular
here's my proposed layout
How much of an issue is it?

Few are blessed with perfect rooms (or anything else). It'll be fine, set it up and enjoy!

If you can isolate the room from the house HVAC you'll be way ahead. I used a MiniSplit unit.

Using floating walls and ceiling (I used Kinetics Isoclips)? I assume that is what you are doing to build the inner room?

Yep _ I'm using Whisper clips to create the room within a room.
but since I'm doing so - I have the "luxury" of creating it whichever way that I like - so if very important, I can make it a rectangle - if it's not important than I'd make it as shown.
