Connection question

Hi all,

I own a "home theater in a box", a 3D blue ray with surround sound package. I love it! However been unable to solve one thing:  How do I just listen to he sound coming out of my LCD TV, without the home theater? In other words, if I shut off my home theater system I have no sound at all.

I have everything running through this system:

- HDMI cable from my cable set top box into the home theater box

- HDMI cable from home theater to my HDTV LCD

My TV only has HDMI "IN" and I think my cable box has only 1 HDMI "OUT", so I dont see any other way?

Is this a common situation or am I completely missing something?

Are you trying to watch "TV" without using the HTiB? Why don't you want to use your HTiB for all of your audio needs?

Yes, exactly. Two reasons. Major reason is my new HDTV has its own content like 3d movies and apps like netflix. When I run these there is no sound from either the HTiB or TV. Secondary, and this is just me being weird, but sometimes I like to save the surround sound for special events like big sports games and movies, to appreciate the sound even more.

I just figured it out ..... The HTiB has to be turned off. Or maybe there's a setting to close the output or something.

Thanks

So you are able to get audio out of tv speaker from the cable box with the HTIB off?

I did a quick look at the HTIB manual and didn't see anywhere that it has Standby pass through. It does have HDMI Audio off and on setting, which off will play out of connected speakers and on will play out of tv speaker.

The HTIB has ARC which is designed to pass the audio from HDTV if the TV is equipped with ARC. If not then it will require an optical cable from HDTV to HTIB.

edit: correct misspelled letters

Ok I will have to check for those features. Not sure what AVR is but will look for it. Thanks!

Sorry, I meant ARC (audio return channel).

p37 of the manual re: HDMI Audio

OFF means video is sent to the TV, but sound is handled by the Samsung.
ON means video and audio are sent to the TV, no sound is produced by the Samsung.

If you want sound from the TV apps to be produced by the Samsung surround system, you can either use an optical connection from the TV to the Samsung or you can enable ARC on both devices to feed audio from the TV over the same HDMI cable that sends picture from the Samsung to the TV. ARC can be flaky at times. Optical is simple and pretty much works all the time.
