which cable to play iphone through old sony stereo?

Thread Starter

I have a lovely old sony minidisc stereo (from around 2000) and would like to play my mp3's from my iphone through it. Seems like the input at the back of my stereo I should use is the one labelled optical in - but struggling to find a the right cable I should be buying.

Any advice please?

Unfortunately, being an Apple product there's no simple cable adapter method. You require an Apple approved docking device, the cheapest with digital optical out is probably the Pure i20 at ~$99. Can also be used for iPods & iPads (needs care when mounting and possibly something to support it, though). See demo:

Note this is for the older 30 pin socket iPhone, so not for the iPhone 5 with the 8 pin lightning socket.

Don't use a digital connection. Use an analog one. You'll need an eighth-inch stereo plug at one end of the cable and whatever your "Aux" or similar input requires on the other end.
