I can't overstate how faint the center channel mixing is. The mix dominated by the mains. You're not going to realize anything is coming from the center unless you put your ear right up to it, and even then it's rarely used except in exactly those situations that I described.

I bet it's working just fine for you, you're just expecting it to do a whole lot more than it's actually doing.

Try setting your front speakers to SMALL.

That usually tells the AVR to kick on the sub and center.

Gotcha, didn't think it'd be directional in that mode that explains it. Sony really needs to get this crap together. So at this point what is the next best option basic Dolby or DTS at 5.1? mad.gif

Another person with the same problem.

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1503156/hdmi-audio-out-issue

I find it hard to believe this is all a coincidence.
Yes you absolutely right!
Well, I'm 100% positive the center channel in active in ghosts. If you're convinced there's an issue, you should probably exchange your PS4 for a new unit, because it's not the game or the firmware.

If somebody has 2k14 please check now if :

Still some glitches sound in the gameplay in hdmi out or optical out, dolby or dts, not pcm...

And please check if you receive sound from the center speaker Without modify anything on the amp ( straight mode dts or dolby)

It sounds to be worst wth optical out dolby digital. So let me know what you think...

All these stuffs are strange. Really strange.

PS4 Linear PCM outputting only stereo over HDMI on Sony ES receiver?! Anyone...

It could be my imagination but to me DTS sounds fuller maybe more powerful than PCM. At least when playing NFS Rivals. I have Sonys new STR DN1040 AVR, is it possible it's better at decoding audio than the PS4s PCM?

hello people (new here)

I got my ps4 today and got the same problems. No matter what PCM displaying on my Onkyo tx-sr 606... but now after a long day i maybe got a fix smile.gif (for my reciever at least)

By the way i'm using HDMI and did'nt tried Optical

Press option -> input assign -> digital audio input

Clean all the "boxes" exept the input you use.. in my case "GAME/TV" has HDMI 4.

There was no problems on my ps3 it worked perfectly! Switching automatically and all wink.gif

This fixed my problem - feel free to ask, will try to remember that i made this post

and sorry for a maybe bad explanation (and my english )

Ok I have had this problem since day one....only on blu rays. I think I figured it out on the linear PCM setting the dynamic audio control keeps a level volume, no spikes but it kills the dynamics. I tried the bitstream setting, under settings menus when playing blu rays. It sounded good then I switched back to the PCM and muted crap again. So
I kept the PCM on and switched off the dynamic audio control and BAM it sounded amazing!! Full lossless audio
post #134 of 150
Sorry dynamic range control!! Turn it off and wake up the sound

Don't forget, just because it's working correctly on your setup doesn't mean there might not be compatibility problems w/ other setups (most likely other receivers).

I just posed this in another thread but, I'm having kind of the same issues. I have my PS4 connected to my Sony STRDH-740, audio and video through HDMI to my HDTV. I have noticed on PS4 no audio commentary coming from my center channel, no Netflix, movies that are in 5.1 the commentary does come through the Center Channel, but movies that are not 5.1 the commentary wont' come from the center channel, but on my PS3 the commentary will come through my center channel speaker no matter if the movie is 5.1 or not. In NBA2K14 next gen commentary won't come from the center channel, but in Madden next gen commentary does??? So is there a setting or change I need to make on my reciever or PS4 to always have the commentary come from the center channel in 5.1, doesn't matter what game it is or movie I watch on Netflix? Also as far as Bluray movies, everything plays perfect, getting full 5.1 surround sound in DTS Master HD. Should I set my PS4 audio setting to PCM to fix this? On a side note, I noticed on my TV broadcast through my direct TV HD box that I wasn't getting commentary through my center channel on regular/non HD channels, went through my reciever settings and set my two front tower speakers to small and I'm now getting commentary in the center speaker for those channels, but still not on Netflix and NBA2K14??

Alright this is absolutely a sony problem. I have been playing bf4 multiplayer since launch and notice audio cuts oit randomly at the start of matches. I first thought it was bf problem but wasnt worried because it came back quickly and not too often. But tonight i decided to play killzone single player with full blown theater setup. I have pioneer vsx 531. Fired up kz and got no speech from center ch and so faint from my mains that i could not hear it unless i turned it up to 64. I thought my amp was not set right but it was on auto as usual. I also always had to change amazon video to ex stereo to get voice but thought this was amazon only encoding stereo. I have my setup with hdmi to amp to tv no pass through options turned off hdmi cntrl and its the same. When i do the workaround provided by sony i only get 2.1 sound. My amp doesnt have prologic button but i guess maybe thats called ex stereo on mine. I want true dts aghhhh. I wrote kotaku and maybe joystiq lets see if we can get this some attention.i guess because i had been playing multiplayer only i hadnt noticed there wasnt a center ch.

I hooked up my pc to the ps4s hdmi and everythings fine with pcm on the reciever. Testing with two guns now i gotta finish this movie lol. Swapped ps4s hdmi with a mono price one didnt help either. Now that my reciever is for sure in the clear i guess i gotta call sony. I did find the pro logic function on the reciever though.gonna tell sony maybe they should ask nvidia for help lmao.further gameplay testing in single player revealed in battlefield that all speech comming through the walkie talkie in the first level is non existant unless in 2.1 regular dialog only comes through the l and r channel. In killzone i can barely hear dialog but everyoth sound comes through ok on the l r but still no center. Rears work fine in both games. This is with the ps4 set to hdmi pcm. As stated before with optical out and pcm i get 2.1

Pretty sure its a handshaking issue with pcm. When my pc is hooked up outputting pcm my reciever will not let me select ex stereo. But when the ps4 is hooked up pcm hdmi i can select ex stereo on my reciever. But i have no more time today to call.

Well, at this point, any patch would be welcome. It's long overdue. Hopefully it helps. Also, I wish they would let us turn off those blasted lights on the front of the controller.

+1 on both counts!

This worked for me!!! Thanks you so much. Once I turned off HDMI ctrl and set it to AMP, all my speakers were firing. Sounds amazing!!!! I never thought a passthrough option would cause so much trouble, but you nailed it!!! I am now getting DTS 5.1 (or dolby if I choose). Thanks again!!!

So has anybody with an Onkyo AVR got full 7.1 audio finally working? What'd you do?

On my 3009 I have Linear PCM since day on everything shows 7.1 but it mixes 9.2 on my setup. No issues in games. Haven't tried movies.

Hi all.  So, this has been bugging me since I had gotten the PS4 two weeks ago.

My setup - Onkyo TX NR818.  PS4 and all devices connected via HDMI to Onkyo and HDMI to the TV.

PS4 Audio setting to Bitstream DTS.

First game - NBA 2K.

Audio only out of the two fronts and two surrounds in Bitstream mode.  (DTS or Dolby)

Sporadic but frequent audio drop to the point where it is very annoying.

Onkyo is not showing PCM, which makes sense as it's the device doing the decoding in this case.

If I play with the different sound modes, of course I can get the center channel to work, but it's the Onkyo blending the mix into the center channel.

Albeit NBA2k box says Dolby Digital and DTS, there is no indication of 5.1 or other sound formats.  This leads me to believe that the mix does not use center channel.

If I place a blue-ray movie into the PS4, once I kick off the movie I go to the options from the controller and within that sub-menu change the audio options (sorry, don't have the exact steps) but am able to get DTS HD Master sound.  Again, using the same config as I mentioned above allowing my Onkyo to manage the sound.

Second game..  inFamous: Second Son -  same config as above and this game uses the center channel.

All this is observation.  I am no expert, nor claim to be, and may have used some improper terminology but I think my analysis is somewhat sound.

Hope this helps somebody.

because when playing BRs there is a 2nd sound options menus

start a BR
Hit the options button
go to sound settings
set it to Bitstream (direct)

that should make DTS-MA, Tru-HD and all that work correctly it does for me

as for games i left it set to Linear PCM and IIRC my receiver just reads MultyChan when playing games, not sure what the PS3 made it say. possibily dolbuy digital

THANK YOU! I just got all my stuff setup and couldn't figure out why my yamaha 475 wouldn't show truehd and only showed pcm. It's sad I had to google the issue, and instead sony requires this is a separate menu other than their man audio menu.

where is this dynamic range control you speak of? I have an Onkyo as well in what setting?

When you start a BR disc it's in the sound menu options for the ps4 not the receiver
