Another Speaker Reccomendation Thread

I know there are a ton of recommendation threads on speakers. But I think my requirements are a little bit different.

One of my friends has a Bose Companion 20 and even though I'm not a Bose fan I fell in love with the volume control pod. I would just buy a pair of the Bose speakers but I would like something perhaps just a little bit cheaper.

My requirements are:

1. Volume Control Pod

2. About $100 max

3. Good sounding for size

Form factor is not very important but I would like it to be either 2.0, 2.1, or even a sound bar. I am using this with a pc with a triple monitor setup and it will be primarily for music, gaming, movies, etc. If I get a sound bar I would just mount it to the back of my triple monitor stand but that is probably the least favored form factor unless a small sound bar sounds really cool.

I would do a diy method if someone can recommend an amplifier that uses a volume control pod, and i have a lot of soldering and electronics experience so it can be very diy beyond hooking up speakers.

Thanks in advance for your help!

How about a Lepai LP-2020A+ and a pair of Pioneer SP-BS22-LR? (these sometimes go on sale to meet your budget)

The Micca MB42X sound like a good choice for you. The new X version has a crossover, and is much improved from the previous speaker. Grab a pair for $80 on Amazon and the Lepai amp mentioned above and you should have a decent 2.0 system.

This is about the third time I've seen the Lepai amp recommended and after looking at the dimensions it is much smaller than I thought. Although, I'm still unsure if it's small enough because I am still pretty set on wanting a pod. If I do choose to go the diy route it will most definitely be with the Lepai.

However I am still interested in something with a pod because love the idea of having the pod on my desk with my mouse and keyboard. And mounting the amp permanently on or under my desk is not an option. It would probably be on the base of my monitor mount if that is the route I go.

What would anyone recommend for a premade system?

Also are there any good recommendations for a diy 2.1 system? I have a decent 8" or 10" Samsung sub from an old surround sound I could use so I am mildly curious.

If recommendations only stay within my budget by buying pre-owned that is completely okay if not preferred because it will probably be better quality.

A "pod" is only going to come with the plastic multi-media speakers from Logitech, etc. This is small enough to sit under a monitor next to it's stand, my t-amp is positioned just so. You don't mount the amp, it just sits wherever.

If you would rather buy a multi-media system, try and find a used Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 system. Though note going with a t-amp and bookshelf speakers like the Micca will give you much better sound quality.

This is very true, and the more I think about it I could mount it to the monitor stand I am making.

For anyone that owns the Lepai mentioned is the blue led overly bright at night? I have read this in some reviews and it is pretty much my last concern.

Also any speakers that are frequently on the used market to keep an eye on?

Hard to say about used speakers, there are so many options, maybe post your local craigslist and we can browse through it.

Is craigslist generally better than ebay for this? I was looking at premade ones on ebay and the deals weren't too bad.

Craigslist doesn't have shipping charges, you can see/hear the product beforehand, and haggle prices. I'll browse through it later and see what I can find.

Take a piece of electrical tape and put it on top.

Thanks again for your help everyone. Just a quick re cap I ended up going with the Lepai amp but my first one is doa, so I should be sending it back soon for an replacement soon. And today, I ordered the Pioneer SP-BS21 LR Speakers from newegg on sale for $45. The 21's were cheaper and smaller than the 41's and the 22's which were recommend on here, and I wanted something smallish for when I'm at my dorm anyways.

my little sister has that exact same setup for her dorm, lepai amp and pioneer bs21. it sounds great you will be surprised. way better than some packaged computer speakers setup.
