Trying to understand sound modes. Denon AVR X2000

Thread Starter
I have center, and two front channels, full range speakers. No sub yet.
Rear and center rear, small speakers.
6 speakers in all. A 6.1 system without the '1'

I'm trying to understand when to use a given sound mode.

For example...the Walking Dead on DirecTV..do I need to know what it was broadcast in? Or do I simply chose the mode that sound best to my ears?
And if so do I do this for every TV show? Or is there a recommendation?

Thanks for any tips.

You can choose to listen to audio in the format in which it's recorded or broadcast (stereo, 5.1, 7.1, etc.) or you can choose to change / enhance it as you like (using modes such as PLIIX, NEO:6, etc.).

Example: If you're listening to something broadcast in stereo and you find that it sounds better "matrixed" into multi-channel audio, enjoy it in multi-channel audio.

Thanks but how do I listen in the mode it was made in.
Will the receiver automatically 'know'.

In the Source set up menu; keep the Decode Mode to Auto. I think that is the default value. Your avr will default to the native format recorded on the source.
