Number of speakers needed.

Hi,

This is a TOTALLY newb question.

If I buy a 7.1 receiver do I have to have 8 speakers. Or, for that matter, when I buy any receiver do I need to have all the speaker outputs attached to something?

I plan on buying a SONY STR-DN1030 which is a 7.2 system but I don't have a room where I can fit 9 speakers. Any ideas?

No, not at all. 7.2 means that the AVR has seven processor channels, seven amplifiers and two line level subwoofer outputs. You attach speakers to any amplifiers you want to use. If you want 2 channel stereo, for instance, you connect the two speakers to the "main" speaker pair amplifiers. The rest of the amplifiers simply aren't used. If you add a powered subwoofer you connect it to one of the subwoofer outputs. If you add a center channel later you connect it to the "center" speaker amplifier and so forth. Welcome fo AVS forum.

AWESOME!!! Thanks, now it all makes sense. I was quite lost for a while.

Now I just need to figure out what speakers to buy, but if I get confused I know where to come and ask :)

It's easier to get you thinking straight if you ask before you become confused.

Give us some info about the room, your tastes, and your budget and see where it goes...

Buy a 5.1, save yourself some money.
