How can I connect my wireless headphones to my Denon X3000 AVR?

Hi everyone,

I have this pair of headphones from Sony: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDRDS6500-Digital-Surround-Headphones/dp/B004P15HD0/

I am trying to figure out how to connect them with my Denon X3000 AVR.

Do I just connect them to the front "phones" jack? Do I need some sort of Y-adapter for that?

Is connecting them in Zone2 an option, and are there any advantages/drawbacks to doing that?

Thank you.

P.S. -- would it be better to connect them to the TV itself? I have all sound go through the speakers connected to the Denon X3000 but am wondering if connecting the headphones to the TV would work?

The X3000 does not have an optical output so you would need to either connect them to the source device or the TV itself if you want to use the optical connection, otherwise you can also connect them to the Zone 2 pre-outs if you use a digital optical --> analog converter like the one below ...

Thank you jdsmoothie. My headphones base station has RCA line in connections also, could I go zone2 pre-outs directly to the base station's RCA line ins?

Or is the optical to analog converter a better way to proceed?

My main goal if possible is to be able to use them simultaneously with my main system and listen to the different source devices connected to the AVR...

No real difference either way, as you're going stereo to the headphones. Connect to the Zone 2 pre-outs and you should be able to play any source connected to the AVR as long as it's set to PCM 2.0 stereo.

Thank you again for the response. Does going from zone2 pre-outs require me to have all my sources connected to the AVR via analog connections? I read on another thread on this forum that any sources connected to the AVR via HDMI will not work via the Zone2 pre-outs.

Thanks!

On the predecessor models to the X3000 yes that would be true. However, the X3000 offers a new feature in that any source that is set to stereo 2.0 (HDMI, optical, digital coax, analog) will pass to either the Zone 2 pre-outs or the Zone 2 speaker posts. If you would prefer not to have to switch the HDMI source to stereo, then you could also connect a set of analog cables from the source and that would ensure the audio would pass to Zone 2 regardless of what the HDMI audio was passing to the main zone.

Thank you again JD.

Sorry for the constant questions but you are very helpful!

When you say "If you would prefer not to have to switch the HDMI source to stereo", does this mean I change the sound to stereo on the source device (blu ray player, satellite box, etc), or is it some setting I change on the X3000 itself?

Thank you!

Source device.

Also note there is a thread dedicated to the Denon "X" series ... review posts #3-6 for more helpful information ....
