That's not the point, of course. Parts of the B-1 and other advanced weapons systems are made in nearly every state (for a reason). High tech armaments, ordinance, and weaponry are about the only Big Things we actually make in this country anymore. They produce some of the only remaining high-wage manufacturing jobs. Whether you consider this is a good or bad thing is typically related to your overall political positioning (and beyond the scope of this posting).
Me, I'd love to see these companies shift focus to space exploration, under the assumption we've got to get off this rock at some point in order to preserve the species long-term. Hopefully before the Earth has another one of those really bad days that come around every few million years, like clockwork. Lots of debris floating around out there and occasionally some of it ventures into our neighborhood. If you don't believe it, ask a dinosaur.
Anyways, given that these Big Ass Companies that make all these more-or-less useless and wasteful weapons of death are important to the American economy, let them do something more worthwhile and inspiring. The problem, of course, is paying for it. It's been proven we'll pay anything
for weapons of war, even when we're not
at war, no questions asked. Paying for anything else, even the very survival of the species, let alone exploration for the sake of pure science, ummmm.... that's a real hard sell.
Kennedy was a good salesman. But even he had to frame the moon-shot program in the context of beating our cold-war Soviet rivals, or the Mercury/Gemini/Apollo programs never would have happened. So, here's hoping the Chinese make a real push into space. Heck, I might even put a poster of a Chinese astronaut up on my wall. GO REDS!
A good enemy is hard to find.
