It's mathematically possible to have all but one person "below average" in a population.
Of course you're correct and while I usually write "by definition, 50% off all people are below the median level of intelligence" it just doesn't strike people the same way. Likely due to a good many people unfamiliar with the term "median". But I'll change it regardless for the sake of accuracy.
Regarding the numbers, frankly, almost a billion dollars in losses in a single year for their television division says a lot about the future of plasma displays. If the problem were LCDs, they likely would have gotten out of that segment.
Moreover, a guy early in this thread mentioned -- several times -- the alliance between Sony and Panasonic in the development of OLED technology. IIRC, that alliance is no more.
